Evonik Introduces TEGO RC 722, a UV Cure Silicone for Coatings

Published on 2015-12-01. Author : SpecialChem

In answer to China’s huge market growth, Evonik Industries launches a new silicone UV cure product TEGO RC 722. TEGO RC 722 is an anchorage component for use in combination with TEGO RC 902 and/or TEGO RC 922 to yield a final release coating with premium release qualities, excellent anchorage and minimal rub-off. TEGO RC 722 makes the dosage of additional anchorage promoter surplus. TEGO RC 722 will complement Evonik’s well balanced product portfolio of TEGO RC silicones.

Evonik’s free radical curing RC silicones have been a key for label applications on a wide variety of filmic or paper surfaces for decades. The very robust curing mechanism is completed in fractions of a second at room temperature which means low energy consumption and no stress to the substrate. Paper
shows excellent lay-flat behavior.

Evonik UV silicone enables the linerless label technology

For the standard PSA label, the release liner makes up to 40 % of the material of the label which ends as waste. These days there is a strong market pull for linerless labels. Linerless label technology offers a genuine contribution to sustainability to our environment as it avoids waste of the used released liner.

UV curing TEGO RC silicones allow successful in-line coating on top of the printed substrates, without interference with the substrate and printing. The adhesive can be applied also in-line on the reverse side of the label, so the label is rolled up without a liner, just like a tape. Typical applications include linerless thermal print labels, wrap around labels or micro perforated decorative labels.

Dr. Stefan Stadtmueller, Vice President Surface Technologies of Evonik remarked, “In Europe only, the release liner waste is estimated to be around 400,000 metric ton. Evonik UV curing TEGO RC silicones could not only help to get rid of the release liner but also save the cost of the release liner & transportation of label, put more labels per roll and reduce the downtime in label production.”
