Dow Launches "Green" Biocide for Paints and Coatings Market

Published on 2007-05-15. Author : SpecialChem

Nürnberg, Germany -- Dow Biocides, a business unit of The Dow Chemical Company ("Dow"), is launching CANGUARD™ ULTRA BIT 20 LE Preservative, a high purity broad-spectrum bactericide for the protection of industrial water-based products against harmful bacteria, yeasts and fungi, underscoring Dow's strategy to strengthen its performance businesses by prioritizing products and technologies that support high-value, end use applications.

"BIT is one of the most widely-used biocides for in-can preservation," said Liam Doherty, global marketing manager, Dow Biocides. "While the industry may never see a completely ‘green' biocide, CANGUARD ULTRA BIT 20 LE has an excellent environmental profile with its low VOC and non-formaldehyde base – one of the best in the marketplace today."

CANGUARD ULTRA BIT 20 LE has exceptional chemical stability and good compatibility with most formulations. Based on the widely-used BIT technology, CANGUARD ULTRA BIT 20 LE Preservative is a long-lasting, non-formaldehyde based biocide that can be used under a broad range of pH and temperature conditions.

"Customers will benefit from not only the broad activity against microbial challenges, but also from the cost-effective advantages of increased purity and increased potential for future development of tailored formulations and combinations," said Doherty.

Customers can expect a number of benefits from the special features of CANGUARD ULTRA BIT 20 LE, including:

  • Low volatile organic content
  • Low color, clear formulation
  • Low viscosity
  • Excellent thermal stability
  • Wide use in pH range (2-12)
  • Very low freezing point; freeze-thaw stable
  • Use at higher temperatures and under very alkaline conditions where other preservatives are less effective
  • Near neutral pH minimizing the risk of pH shock of the treated formulation
  • Developed from CANGUARD ULTRA BIT paste, a highly pure grade of BIT
  • Free from formaldehyde and 5-chloro-2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one
  • Compatible with most anionic, cationic, and non-ionic dispersants

CANGUARD ULTRA BIT 20 LE Preservative is an effective preservative in most aqueous compositions. The most common applications include the preservation of polymer latexes and emulsion systems, water-based paints, coatings, adhesives, oil-in-water emulsions, textile spin-finish solutions, fountain solutions, and bacterial control in the paper-making process.

Due to regulatory requirements, not all products are available in all regions. Please check with your Dow representative for additional information.
