Doresco® UVC87 Polymers Promote Adhesion in Energy-Cured Plastic Coatings

Published on 2008-06-05. Author : SpecialChem

CLEVELAND, OH -- Lubrizol Advanced Materials, Inc., a subsidiary of The Lubrizol Corporation, has announced that Doresco® UVC87 specialty polymers for energy-curable applications. These polymers are designed to modify an existing energy-cured formulation to increase adhesion on plastics, especially low-surface energy plastics that can create adhesion challenges.

Ideal for use in UV-cure and electron beam curing formulations, the Doresco UVC87 series - which includes UVC87-5 and UVC87-7 polymers - are polymeric materials supplied dissolved in reactive diluent monomers. The level of material needed to obtain adhesion is highly dependent on the formulation and the substrate to be coated. Used as a modifier, Doresco UVC87 polymers are not considered an additive nor should they be used as a bulk formulation material. For example, typical usage levels for additives are 0-5 percent, modifiers 5-30 percent and bulk materials over 30 percent by weight.

The portion of the UVC87 series products is similar; the differentiation in the two products is within the diluent type and content. The adhesion performance of the UVC87-5 and UVC87-7 are similar, with the UVC87-7 being softer and curing faster due to the difference in reactive diluent. Doresco UVC87 series resins can be used in a variety of end-use applications, including inks, coatings, overprint varnishes and laminating adhesives. The Doresco UVC87 series is compatible with most acrylic, acrylic-urethane, acrylic-ester, and acrylic-epoxy energy cured formulations. However, the compatibility, modification level and coating performance are highly dependent on the specific coating formulation and substrate.
