DataLase™ Wins Circle of Excellence Award as One of the Most Technically Innovative Products of 2004

DataLase™, the innovative colour change solution from the colour change specialist, Sherwood Technology, was named a winner in the 2004 Photonics Spectra Circle of Excellence awards, which honour the 25 most technically innovative products of the year. Combining chemistry, substrate conversion and laser energy, DataLase™ uses very low power laser light for the high speed printing of images.

Sherwood developed DataLase™ in order to meet the need for a clean, high speed, universal, high quality method for applying virtual labels, anti-counterfeiting solutions, codes and other graphics to an infinite array of materials at full production line speeds. Its innovation lies in the use of a robust inert inorganic additive which forms a positive image once exposed to low level energy emitted from an industrial CO2 marking laser. DataLase™ chemistry can be added to inks, coatings, processed plastics, and an array of packaging and printing materials such as paper, board, foil and metals.

DataLase™ is a facilitating technology that extends and enhances the use of laser marking and imaging for the photonics industry. Use of this technology not only overcomes many of the deficiencies associated with alternative offerings from outside the photonics sector (e.g. inkjet, thermal transfer, impact printing) but also extends the use of existing laser marking devices into new areas. For example, the ability to incorporate a laser markable/ responsive layer between the plies of a laminated material offers the potential to create bespoke security features.

The DataLase™ chemistry is completely non-toxic and environmentally friendly, and requires no mechanical contact. The absence of ink or ribbons guarantees that the technique is virtually maintenance free, creating substantial benefits over existing methods. DataLase™ has already achieved a high level of recognition within the photonics industry; leading laser vendors such as Domino Amjet, Markem and Videojet specify its use in high-speed applications on substrates where conventional laser 'ablation' has proved unsatisfactory.

For the past 16 years the photonics industry has looked to the Circle of Excellence awards as the benchmark for innovation. The competition has earned this respect as winning products are carefully assessed for excellence, innovation and achievement by a panel of knowledgeable peers. This distinguished group of acknowledged experts select 25 winners based solely on innovation and merit.

Steve Kelly, Managing Director of Sherwood collected the award at a ceremony during Photonics West 2005. "This award is particularly meaningful as it has come directly from our peers in the photonics industry who have recognised the innovation and wide ranging applications of this groundbreaking product," comments Steve Kelly.
