Clariant's Pigments & Additives Division at the 4th Paint Show in Tokyo

MUTTENZ, Switzerland, -- With the goal of reducing volatile organic compounds (VOC) in paints and coatings by roughly 30%, the Japanese industry has entered a new era. By 2010, coatings - primarily automotive coatings, but also architectural and other paints - are required to be water-based. This turning point underlines the growing environmental awareness in the ,land of the rising sun," which is also reflected in the slogan of the Paint Show 2006 in Tokyo from April 6 to 8: "Painting On Future: Painting Technology for a Colorful Life."

In keeping with the Paint Show’s motto of environmentally compatibility, the Pigments & Additives Division will make products for water-based coatings the center of its trade fair presentation at the Tokyo Big Site at Stand 1-56 in Hall East 1. As a member of the Ecological and Toxicological Association of Dyes and Organic Manufacturers (ETAD), Clariant has been committed to sustainable and environmentally friendly product development for many years.

For example, many pigments of the Hostaperm® series are suitable for coloring waterbased coating systems. To reconcile water-based and solvent-based (high-solids) coating systems, the Pigments & Additives Division also offers "twin pigments." These pigments owe their development to the fact that the use of conventional pigments in different coating systems often leads to different coloristics due to the systems’ varying wetting and stabilization properties. This can become a serious problem, for example when a shade in an aqueous OEM base coat has to be recreated in a HS refinish coating, or an American OEM color is to be used in other regions of the world. Twin pigments can avoid this problem. The latest developments are the innovative diketopyrrolopyrole pigments Hostaperm® Rubine D3B and Hostaperm® Rubine D3B-WD. These two highperformance rubine pigments have excellent properties. Because of their high transparency their main applications are in combination with effect pigments, such as aluminum bronze or mica pigments.

Highly efficient light stabilization for water-based coatings is offered by the highly concentrated dispersions of the Sanduvor® range. The Sanduvor® disp. XP range from the Pigments & Additives Division is easy to incorporate and handle. In addition to the broad range of applications, additional benefits are that the additives are toxicologically and ecologically safe. Because of their conditioning with biocides and humectants, the products possess a significantly longer shelf life than other light stabilizer dispersions.

Many of the products from the Pigments & Additives Divisions deserve to be classified as "environmentally friendly":

Several years ago, a pioneering flame retardant concept was launched under the trade name Exolit. Especially in view of their overall qualities, these non-halogenated products based on various phosphorous compounds offer an excellent alternative to conventional flame retardants.

All Exolit® products meet the current requirements for environmentally compatible and highly efficient fire protection. The benefits of the flame retardants are low smoke density and almost no corrosive gases in case of a fire. Due to its numerous modifications and synergist combinations, Exolit® is suitable for many different applications: steel coatings, sealants,
adhesives, wood, textiles, polyurethanes, thermosets (resins), thermoplastics, and wood plastic composites (WPC).

Increasing environmental awareness has also given a boost to powder coatings, where micronized waxes based on polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), or polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) are often being used. One of the latest products is the micronized TP Ceridust 3921 F, a PTFE wax mixture based on an innovative polyolefin. Not only does it improve the scratch resistance, it also enhances slip resistance and anti-blocking. As a tribo additive, light stabilizer, and processing stabilizer, Sanduvor® 3051 pwd. has shown excellent effectiveness.
