Bayer at SSPC 2015: Presented Application of Coatings Over Hot-dipped Galvanizing

Published on 2015-02-04. Author : SpecialChem

LAS VEGAS -- Duplex coatings are used to protect galvanizing in harsh environments, provide aesthetics and enhance corrosion protection.

While epoxy/polyurethane coatings are commonly used as duplex coatings in highly corrosive environments, high-build polyaspartic coating systems offer several advantages when compared with these traditional coatings. Todd Williams, laboratory manager, Corrosion Protection, Coatings, Adhesives & Specialties (CAS), Bayer MaterialScience LLC, presents “Application and Evaluation of Coatings Over Hot-dipped Galvanizing,” during SSPC 2015 in Las Vegas.

During his presentation, Williams will highlight results from a study that benchmarked high-build polyaspartic coatings with epoxy/polyurethane coatings as well as application techniques. Ahren Olson, market manager, Corrosion Protection, CAS, Bayer MaterialScience LLC; and Kevin Irving, central sales and marketing manager, AZZ Galvanizing Inc., are contributing authors to the study.

Polyaspartic coatings were evaluated due to their ability to be applied in thick films, which reduces the number of coats necessary from two to one by eliminating the primer layer. Furthermore, unlike other coatings, polyaspartic coatings cure at room temperature, eliminating the requirement to pre-bake the galvanizing. ―Polyaspartic coatings offer the advantage of increasing productivity by applying one thick coating layer that cures rapidly – typically providing dry-to handle times in the two-hour range,‖ explains Williams. ―It’s worth noting that polyaspartic coatings were also found to perform as well as epoxy/polyurethane coatings in cyclic prohesion and wet adhesion evaluations over blasted hot-dipped galvanizing substrates.

The authors also emphasize that surface preparation is critical to achieving long-term performance, with abrasive blasting found to be the most effective surface preparation technique.
