Bayer at CORROSION’15: to Present Epoxy & PU Coatings to Provide Corrosion Protection

Published on 2015-03-16. Author : SpecialChem

PITTSBURGH -- Industrial maintenance coatings are shifting from two-coat to one-coat solutions in order to reduce complexity and improve productivity in the shop or in the field. Coatings specifiers are increasingly turning to polyaspartic urethane coatings technology from Bayer MaterialScience LLC to achieve these goals.

One-coat formulations are commonly used in the oil and gas market to increase productivity, decrease down time and reduce waste and inspection. Traditional high-build technologies for the corrosion protection market include direct-to-metal epoxy and polyurethane, while technologies developed over the last decade based on polysiloxane and polyaspartic urethane are becoming used more frequently. To benchmark the performance of these coatings in corrosive environments, accelerated testing was conducted on six commercial direct-to-metal coatings and a polyaspartic urethane guide formulation from Bayer MaterialScience. Their performance was compared against a two-coat epoxy / polyurethane control.

Todd Williams, laboratory manager, Corrosion Protection, Coatings, Adhesives & Specialties (CAS), Bayer MaterialScience LLC, presents “High-build, direct-to-metal atmospheric coatings for moderately corrosive environments,” during CORROSION 2015 Conference and Exhibition in Dallas. The study, co-authored by Ahren Olson, market manager, Corrosion Protection, CAS, Bayer MaterialScience LLC, compares performance characteristics tested to C3 requirements per ISO 12944. C3 environmental conditions are defined as industrial and urban atmospheres with an average sulfur oxide contamination level, or onshore areas of low salinity. Additional accelerated testing not specified in ISO 12944 was also performed.

“One-coat polyaspartic urethane formulations used in this study showed rapid dry times while maintaining equivalent-to-better performance when compared with traditional epoxy / polyurethane two-coat systems,” Williams said.

Additionally, Olson and Mark Hudson, corrosion specification specialist, Sherwin-Williams, will present “Two-coat systems, myth or reality?” at the NACE DOT forum. Olson and Hudson will discuss polyaspartic urethane technology and its value for asset owners. They will also share select case studies.
