BASF Coatings Introduces XColors for OEM Application

Published on 2011-07-20. Author : SpecialChem

MÜNSTER -- Practically no other factor determines the effect of a car the way its color does. Colors are what turn vehicles into emotional products. As a result, carmakers are increasingly using striking colors. BASF Coatings recognized this early on and is now offering carmakers a unique color concept in which a fine feeling for color trends and innovative paint development come together - true to its expectation to always be number 1 when it comes to color. Launched under the name XColors - designed by BASF, it results in pure emotion.

XColors combine modern design and innovative technology

"Our new XColors range allows our automotive customers to combine state-of-the-art design and the highest level of application reliability in OEM application," said Stephan Schwarte, head of Color Design at BASF Coatings. XColors can manage the balancing act between design and feasibility. Special ingredients and innovative formulas and paint technology are responsible for the extraordinary color effects. For instance, very special pigments are used. BASF is not only breaking new technological ground with its product family, but its designers have also recognized that with XColors, carmakers can now use color as a distinguishing feature even more effectively.

One segment in the XColors product family consists of "XFine" colors. XFine stands for strong metallic effects that bring about elegant silver. Thanks to an innovative formula, very fine aluminum particles are arranged flat next to the other and thus produce a kind of mirror effect on the body. "This effect yields extremely powerful contrasts. The color appears particularly bright on the edges of the car body, while it has a very dark effect when viewed from the side," explained Mark Gutjahr, color designer at BASF Coatings. "We designers then refer to this as a very bright highlight and a dark flip effect. XFine uses this flip effect to highlight the car body and all its contours particularly strongly."

Various car shows have already provided indications that the colors have been well received by carmakers. Audi presented the e-tron Spyder in the "Seductive Silver" XFine color highlighting the showcar's sporty touch. But this is just the beginning - further ideas for innovative colors that turn cars into eye-catchers at car shows and on the roads are already in place. In addition to the XFine colors, more colors will join the XColors product family - much to the delight of carmakers and drivers.
