Arkema Introduces ENCOR® Flex 192 Acrylic Binder Designed for TPO Roof Coatings

Published on 2012-12-03. Author : SpecialChem

Arkema Coating Resins has extended its line of binders for elastomeric roof coatings with the introduction of ENCOR® Flex 192. The new modified acrylic binder is designed for coatings used in the restoration of low-slope, commercial thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) roofing membranes. Properly formulated, ENCOR® Flex 192 offers outstanding dirt pickup resistance and adhesion to TPO, and can eliminate the need for a solvent primer to help lower roof maintenance and restoration costs.

"Thermoplastic polyolefin membranes are popular and durable roofing materials but eventually these systems must be repaired or replaced," notes Eric Kaiser, Global Marketing Manager for Arkema Coating Resins.

"The useful life of an installed TPO roof that is starting to show wear in the form of cracking, UV degradation, discoloration and loss of reflectivity, can often be extended through the use of an elastomeric roof coating. By introducing ENCOR® Flex 192, we are offering the formulator a binder specifically designed to enhance coating adhesion to low-energy TPO substrates without the added cost of a solvent primer, and to enable coatings that restore the reflectivity and energy savings properties of the original roof membrane."

ENCOR® Flex 192 is the fourth product in the company's system of coating resins for Cool Roof coatings. In addition to the new product focused on TPO membranes, three systems are available, allowing greater formulation flexibility across different applications:

  • AC III Binder System - This system uses a Kynar Aquatec® FMA-12 PVFD based topcoat and ENCOR® Flex 187 all acrylic basecoat to provide the highest possible level of performance and durability. It is designed primarily for the most demanding cool roof coating applications.
  • AC II Binder System - Utilizing a proprietary ENCOR® Flex 187 all acrylic polymer, this base and topcoat system delivers excellent performance and meets ASTM D-6083, "Standard Specification for Liquid Applied Acrylic Coating Used in Roofing."
  • AC I Binder System - This ENCOR® Flex 3186 styrene acrylic system provides a good mix of performance and value for less demanding applications.
