Alpha-Silanes from Wacker Improve Scratch Resistance of Coatings and Bonding Properties of Adhesives

MUNICH, Germany -- At the European Coatings Show (ECS) in Nuremberg from April 26 to 28, the Munich-based WACKER Group will be presenting two product innovations: organofunctional alpha-silanes for the coatings, adhesives and sealants industry and a new terpolymer for formulating flexible tile-adhesive mixtures.

WACKER has expanded its successful range of GENIOSIL® organofunctional silanes. At the ECS in Nuremberg, the chemical company will be presenting a new generation of organofunctional a-silanes in which the classic propylene bridge has been replaced by a methylene bridge. The result: the new silanes are extremely reactive and facilitate much better hydrolysis and condensation of the Si-alkoxy groups than conventional commodity silanes.

This turbo effect can be exploited to produce completely novel rapid-cure sealants and adhesives - for example, one-pack adhesives, whose properties could previously only be achieved with difficult-to-process two-pack systems. Adhesives formulated with the silane-modified polyether GENIOSIL® STP-E adhere better than comparable systems, have a high level of chemical resistance and possess exactly the right combination of strength and elasticity needed in many applications. GENIOSIL® STP-E 10 is suitable for sophisticated adhesive formulations in the automotive sector, in container construction and for bonding parquet floors.

Paints and surface coatings, too, benefit from the markedly improved coating properties conferred by WACKER's new GENIOSIL® a-silanes. It all boils down to the crosslinking mechanism. Thus, automotive finishes formulated with GENIOSIL® not only feature excellent curing and improved adhesion. They also offer better hardness and scratch resistance along with chemical resistance. Surface coatings which have been crosslinked with the aid of a -silanes retain their gloss, even after frequent car washes. Manufacturers of furniture coatings can also use these innovative GENIOSIL® silanes to produce scratch-proof coatings that are considered harmless when used as intended.

VINNAPAS® LL 7200: New Terpolymer for Flexible Tile Adhesives

A further product innovation to be presented by WACKER at the ECS is the terpolymer VINNAPAS® LL 7200. Patented, developed and marketed exclusively by WACKER POLYMERS, this redispersible powder imparts outstanding adhesion, binding power and extreme toughness to cementitious tile adhesives. Measurements in compliance with EN 1348 show that tile adhesives modified with VINNAPAS® LL 7200 perform much better after wet and freeze/thaw testing and are 30 percent stronger than conventional systems.

The new terpolymer also has the edge when it comes to deformation. That is why VINNAPAS® LL 7200 is ideal for formulating flexible C2 tile adhesives. Tile adhesives modified with VINNAPAS® LL 7200 are not susceptible to weathering influences. Not even the toughest conditions of freeze/thaw and moisture will impair the tensile and flexural strength of the mortar. The terpolymer itself has no effect on the rheology of the freshly mixed mortar and does not contain any volatile organic compounds.

Silicone Resin Emulsion Paints Initiative Now Focusing on Eastern Europe

The "We Help Facades" silicone resin emulsion paints initiative launched by WACKER SILICONES in 2003 is in full swing. Having focused last year on France, Spain and Portugal, the participating companies have now turned their attention to Eastern Europe. Polish, Russian, Slovenian and Czech language versions of the official website www.srep.com are currently being prepared. By year-end, the website will be available in more than 15 languages.

As part of the initiative, WACKER SILICONES will also be presenting a new flyer detailing the economic benefits of silicone resin emulsion paints. Because of their water-vapor permeability and water repellency, they provide facades with lasting protection against grime and damp - protection that cuts the number of renovations and attendant costs by 30 percent on average.

  • VINNOL® is the WACKER brand name for a broad range of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate copolymers. The range contains grades both with and without functional groups, and so offers a wide spectrum of uses. All VINNOL® grades can be combined with each other, a fact which allows the coating or printing ink to be fine-tuned to the requirements of the application. VINNOL® E grades, which have excellent pigment wetting, are suitable for formulating gravure and screen-printing inks as well as inkjet inks. The VINNOL® M grades, which contain carboxyl groups, show outstanding adhesion on metal and are therefore the binders of choice for formulating printing inks and surface coatings for metal or metallized substrates.   • PIOLOFORM® - Polyvinyl Butyrals for the Surface Coatings and Printing Inks Industry

  • PIOLOFORM® polyvinyl butyrals are versatile binders. They exhibit excellent adhesion on aluminum and plastics films and are therefore the preferred binders for formulating printing inks for flexible laminate packaging. PIOLOFORM® polyvinyl butyrals are flexible, odorless and taste-neutral and show little solvent retention. Formulations based on specialty low-viscosity grades can absorb more pigments and thereby greatly increase the intensity of the ink. PIOLOFORM® is also indispensable in a large number of industrial coatings, such as corrosion-protection primers, masonry paints and plastics paints.

  • VINNAPAS® Solid Resins: Polyvinyl Acetate for Coatings and Adhesives Applications

  • Because they adhere so well on different substrates, such as wood, cardboard and metal, VINNAPAS® solid resins are the preferred binders for solvent-based adhesives in the adhesives industry. VINNAPAS® can also be used for formulating primers for metallizing packaging or modifying NC coatings. The product range covers homopolymers and copolymers in various viscosities and delivery forms.
