Technological Developments in the Water-Borne and High-solids Sectors Offer Significant Growth Potential in the European Coating Dispersant Market

Published on 2007-08-07. Author : SpecialChem

LONDON -- The European low VOC directive 1999/13/EU is defining the increasing demand for aqueous and high-solids systems Dispersants, thus positively influencing the coating Dispersant market. The shift to water-borne coatings is boosting demand for aqueous Dispersants such as acrylic Dispersants, polyester polyurethanes, polyphosphates and polyacrylate salts, which comprise the growing sectors of the market.

New analysis from Frost & Sullivan, Coating Dispersant European Market, finds that the market earned revenues of EUR468.2 million in 2006 and estimates this to reach EUR617.7 million by 2013. "The European low VOC directive aims to reduce VOC emission levels, which eventually will lead to the reduction of solvent quantity in coating formulations," notes Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Yana Charushkina. "This identifies a general trend of replacing solvent-soluble Dispersants with aqueous Dispersants."

In addition to this, the second trend emerging from this directive is the implementation of the high-solids technology to produce coating additives. The high-solids 100 percent active Dispersants constitute the high-end market sector, which expects to reach its peak by 2009.

However, a key factor restraining market growth is the high-level competitiveness that prevails. Competition in the market is based primarily on technology, followed by price. Because of these factors, emerging companies are experiencing significant entry barriers.

"The concentration ratio of the market is low and the leading companies are increasing their market shares," states Charushkina. "Therefore, new entrants will need to ramp up their efforts to create a niche in the market."

Technical expertise of the suppliers, established liabilities among market participants and close co-operation with customers are the main competitive strengths of the companies, which are assisting in propelling demand as well as increasing prices and revenues.

Manufacturers are striving to achieve technical expertise through investments in R&D, globalisation of the customer database, technical service and networking, emphasis on product development and restructuring as well as the introduction of innovative technologies and products in the market.
