Sono-Tek at Compamed: to Highlight its MediCoat BCC Drug Coated Balloon Coating System

Published on 2012-11-07. Author : SpecialChem

Sono-Tek Corporation plans to highlight a new drug coated balloon coating system, MediCoat BCC at Compamed 2012, Nov 14-16 in Dusselsorf, Germany, Hall 8b, Booth E31. The newest addition to its full line of precision implantable medical device coating systems, the MediCoat BCC System is a fully enclosed, programmable system designed to coat common sizes and types of balloon mounted catheters for the purpose of drug delivery during in vivo procedures such as angioplasty.

The MediCoat Balloon Catheter Coating System is fitted with either MicroMist or AccuMist ultrasonic atomizing nozzles depending upon coating requirements. These nozzles are proven for atomizing drugs such as Paclitaxel, Rapamycin, Heparin and Aspirin. Sono-Tek has extensive expertise coating implantable cardiac and peripheral stents, and other precision medical devices with bioabsorbable anti-restinosis solutions with or without polymers. The same proven ultrasonic coating technology used in out MediCoat stent coating systems is employed in the new MediCoat BCC system. The low velocity soft spray and uniform, micron sized droplets generated with Sono-Tek nozzle systems provide superior adherence to balloon surfaces without any overspray, cracking, or peeling of the coating. Sono-Tek's extensive understanding of implantable coating characteristics has enabled us to apply this expertise in developing a system for drug coated balloons. Ultrasonic spray offers the ability to create very thin, uniform functional coatings not possible with any other spray technology, with superior control of spray characteristics and very low flow rate capabilities.

The MediCoat BCC is available in two different configurations. The MediCoat BCC185 is designed to coat balloons up to 185 mm in length and the MediCoat BCC300 coats balloons up to 300 mm in length. For both models, the cassette fixture holds one catheter up to 2 meters in length. In addition, the balloon catheter cassette assembly can be removed for coating other medical devices, making the MediCoat BCC a flexible programmable R&D development system for a multitude of medical device coatings.

The MediCoat BCC features:

  • Highly uniform thin film coatings using ultrasonic nozzle technology
  • Dramatic material savings compared to dip coating
  • Reliable, repeatable, controllable coatings
  • Durable coatings with no cracking or peeling
  • Windows-based software control and programming, with recipe storage
  • Automated drying sequence following coating using precision gas hypotube
  • Optional dual nozzle configuration for layering of different chemistries and ease of setup for multiple spray applications

Sono-Tek is world renowned for supplying patented precision ultrasonic coating technology to the medical industry, providing the highest quality medical coatings available on the market for over 2 decades. Medical device manufacturers worldwide have improved their quality and throughput with Sono-Tek coating equipment, including validation documentation support.
