Rohm and Haas Renews Commitment to Conservation Market

Published on 2007-12-13. Author : SpecialChem

PHILADELPHIA -- Rohm and Haas Company has announced its renewed commitment to the conservation market by confirming plans to continue production of its Paraloid™ product family, long considered the material of preference for a wide array of conservation applications. Paraloid products, in particular Paraloid B-72, have been used by conservators to repair or preserve such world icons as the Sistine Chapel, objects found in the tomb of Tutankhamen, the Terracotta Warriors of Chinese Emperor Qin, and on other countless works of art.

In making the announcement, Rohm and Haas also extended its commitment to providing these materials to other related markets including archeology, anthropology and paleontology. Company representatives have been working closely with experts in these fields for the last 12 months, both in the United States and internationally, to better understand the long-term issues experts are facing and how Rohm and Haas can help support their efforts.

Luis Fernandez, Vice President and Business Group Director for Paint and Coatings Materials, says the activities are part of a larger effort. "Over the last several months, we have received inquiries from some of the leading museums around the world asking if we intended to continue to produce museum-grade Paraloid products, and the answer is yes. Paraloid is a part of our larger acrylic platform of products. We are proud that this platform is part of the fabric of museum and fine art life. I can think of no better way to support the history of the world than by providing acrylic products that protect that history for generations to come."

The company plans to announce a more comprehensive approach to this market later in the year. Renette Richard, Product Line Manager for the Paraloid product line, says the first step is to build a rapport with conservators. "We know these people are experts in their field. Right now, we are trying to connect them with our own experts inside Rohm and Haas. We believe that simply supporting an exchange of ideas between the two groups is the best and most productive way to understand the impact we have today, and to shape our potential participation in the future."
