Researchers at University of Isfahan Synthesize Zinc oxide Thin Film Coatings to Eliminate Sulphuric Compounds from Polluted Water

TEHRAN (INIC) -- Iranian researchers at University of Isfahan synthesized zinc oxide thin film coatings modified with silver nanoparticles in order to improve the process of elimination of sulphuric organic compounds from polluted water.

In his PhD thesis, Reza Sheibani, one of the Iranian researchers, produced zinc oxide thin film coatings modified with silver nanoparticles through various deposition methods such as spin coating and dip coating, and he studied its application in the purification of water polluted by sulphuric organic compounds such as mercaptans.

"Since zinc oxide (ZnO) is a semi-conductor with a direct energy gap and very good light scattering properties, Ag-ZnO nanocomposite can have many applications in optoelectronics industry. For instance, it can be used in polarised ultraviolet light scattering devices as the electron injecting layer," Dr. Mohammad Hossein Habibi, organic chemistry lecturer of University of Isfahan and another member of the research team, also told the news service of INIC.

The supervising professor of the thesis, Dr. Habibi, continued, "In this research, thin film Ag-ZnO nanostructure coating was synthesized on a simple glassy substrate by using two methods of spin and dip coating methods. Then, the synthesized coatings were thermally treated in a temperature range of 350-550 °C. The spectral and structural properties of the coatings were determined as functions of the operating temperature and silver nanoparticles percentage by visible-ultraviolet spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray scattering spectroscopy."

According to the researcher of the project, all particles of the thin film grew regularly towards the outer surface, and the surface was free from impurity and tiny cracks. The nanofilm synthesized in this research had also an appropriate surface homogeneity.
