REACH program now underway at Firwood

Published on 2007-08-27. Author : SpecialChem

Work on REACH, the Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of CHemicals has now commenced at Firwood Paints to ensure continuity of supply of materials once this new legislation takes effect. REACH has a number of aims and brings together various EC Directives concerning the handling, use and storage of chemicals.

  • It aims to improve the protection of human health and the environment when using chemicals.
  • To make persons who place chemicals on the market, be they manufacturers importers, responsible for understanding the risk involved in their use.
  • To permit the free movement of chemicals throughout the EC.
  • Enhance innovation in the EC Chemicals Industry.

The legislation came into effect on 1 June 2007. The producers and importers of "Substances", the core chemicals used in industry, will need to register each substance with the European Chemicals Agency (ECA). This new agency to be located in Helsinki, Finland will be fully operational in 2008 and will be the central registration body for chemicals used in the EC.

The initial task for paint manufacturers is to ensure that all substances are pre-registered with the ECA. Pre-registration will permit the ECA to identify those organisations that have interests in full registration of a substance and put them in contact with each other to share costs of registration and the work involved. Those substances at most concern will be the first to be registered and the whole process of registration will get split into three phases spread over 11 years. It is likely that manufacturers will decide not to register some substances and consequently will not be in a position to use them in their formulations. This will inevitably lead to some products being withdrawn from sale.

Firwood Paints fully support the primary objective of protecting human health and the environment when using its products and will continue to develop materials that are safer to use. The full impact of REACH will not be known for some time and Firwood will endeavour to keep customers updated on progress that it makes in ensuring compliance with this legislation.
