PHILADELPHIA, PA -- Rohm and Haas Company announced that Dr. J. Michael Fitzpatrick, President and Chief Operating Officer, has elected to retire effective this coming January. Fitzpatrick, 57, joined the company after completing post doctoral studies at Harvard University in 1975, and was named to his current position in 1999.

Commenting on Fitzpatrick's decision, Raj Gupta, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer said, "Mike has been an extremely important partner in the six years we have teamed-up to complete the transformation of Rohm and Haas following the acquisitions of Morton International, Lea Ronal and Rodel. He has an enormous capacity for understanding our core technologies, and has contributed to our global business success in ways too numerous to catalogue. In addition to his innate leadership abilities, and talent for managing large complex undertakings, Mike has an intuitive grasp of multi-cultural operations and strategy which results from living abroad for Rohm and Haas for 13 consecutive years."

In announcing his decision to retire, Fitzpatrick noted his entire professional career has been with one employer: "Every task I undertook, from my first day as a research scientist to my most recent work as President and COO, has been singularly focused on making Rohm and Haas a stronger company. I consider myself blessed to have had the opportunities I was provided. The last five years have been extraordinary: we have completed more than 40 external portfolio transactions, and replaced hundreds of legacy computer systems with a single-instance enterprise-wide IT platform." He added: "Today we have a strong portfolio, the admiration of our peers and competitors, a pool of motivated and capable managers, modern and sophisticated communications technology, and excellent financials."

Fitzpatrick also pointed out, "At this stage of my professional life I am grateful I have the energy, and the family support which allows me to seek new opportunities. In a number of conversations with Raj Gupta, I have made clear my desire to continue to grow professionally. I am convinced Rohm and Haas is in excellent shape today, and well equipped with the next generation of highly qualified leaders. This is the right time for me to bid farewell to the company and pursue new challenges."

Fitzpatrick earned his PhD at Rice University and held positions in Research and Marketing before his assignment to Brazil in 1981. Subsequent appointments include general management responsibilities in Italy, Mexico, and the United Kingdom. He returned to the United States as Vice President of Research and was elected to the Board of Directors in 1999. After serving for a period as Chief Technology Officer, he was named President and Chief Operating Officer. On the occasion of his retirement from active employment, Fitzpatrick also will retire from the Board.
