Premiere for ONYX HD waterborne basecoat technology in Russia

Published on 2007-04-13. Author : SpecialChem

The trend toward waterborne basecoat technology is also catching on in Russia. BASF Coatings' R-M brand paint's ONYX HD waterborne basecoat system is celebrating its premiere in Russia with a training seminar in Moscow. This is the first time Russian painters have had the opportunity to become acquainted with R-M brand waterborne automotive refinish products.

The statistics associated with the Russian market are impressive. There are around 25 million vehicles, requiring more than 5 million liters of automotive refinish products per year. In order to position the company in this expanding market, Jean-Pierre Pattou, head of Business Development Export for BASF Coatings Northeastern Europe, is pursuing a special strategy. "You have to offer the customers in Russian-speaking countries the entire portfolio of R-M automotive refinish products." The same holds for the changeover to ONYX HD, R-M's line of waterborne paints. Contrary to the European Union, where stringent VOC legislation is in place, the changeover is not compulsory in Russia and Eastern Europe. For this reason, Pattou thinks that the right communication is especially important—both between BASF Coatings and the importers in the countries, as well as between the importers and their customers.

Learning by doing

R-M invites the National Head Trainers of the importers from Eastern Europe to its Refinish Competence Center in Clermont de l'Oise, France, on a regular basis. There they are trained to use state-of-the-art technologies with the objective of transferring this expertise to the importers' organizations and to car dealers and body shops. In order to satisfy the customers' high standards, R-M offers both the ONYX HD modern paint technology as well as a wide range of services. The advantages of the product include easy handling, lower material consumption, shorter application times, and space-efficient storage. In order to demonstrate this, the training courses also take place at the customers' sites – like the one currently being held at a large Moscow body shop with Global Trainer Peter van Keulen.

Next on the agenda is the changeover to ONYX HD in Belarus and Ukraine.

R-M Automotive Refinish: an important part of BASF Coatings

Under the R-M brand, BASF markets a comprehensive range of automotive refinishing paint systems, focusing on eco-efficient waterborne basecoats and high-solids paints. By using these systems all legal solvent-reduction requirements can be complied with anywhere in the world, and with regard to appearance and resistance, the products meet the same quality standards as solvent-borne paints. In this area, the company offers a wide variety of services to support its customers. R-M Automotive Refinish is approved by most of the leading car manufacturers for aftermarket repair and chosen by the world's most prestigious car companies for its color expertise.
