PPG's New Matt Clearcoats D8115 Matt and D8117 Semi-Gloss to be Used on Daimler Vehicles

PPG Industries' automotive refinish business has announced the approval by Daimler AG of PPG's new matt clearcoats D8115 Matt and D8117 Semi-Gloss for use on all Daimler matt-finished passenger cars worldwide. The new clearcoats use a unique PPG dual-clear repair process recently validated by the MERCEDES-BENZ® brand.

Full-body matt clears have increased in popularity in recent years. These finishes are technically complex to repair with the perfect level of matt effect, especially with black and other very dark colors. Minor damage often must be repaired by painting full panels in basecoat and clearcoat, or by painting an entire side of a vehicle. PPG's dual-clear process enables the basecoat to be blended, which significantly reduces the required repair area and brings the process back into more conventional dimensions.

Demonstrated to Daimler on a matt black bodyshell in Hilden, Germany, the dual-clear process uses a glossy clearcoat as the first coat, followed immediately by a second coat based on a blend of the two new clearcoats, D8115 and D8117. This process provides a match to the original color while maintaining an even level of matt finish across the repair area. The two new matt clearcoats were specially developed to provide the end user with the flexibility to blend the clearcoats together to achieve a perfect match to original matt finishes. This approach can be used on all colors to achieve an effective repair, and it is a key step in the efficient repair process for darker colors such as the Mercedes-Benz brand's Nachtschwarz black. PPG is first to market in recommending this process with its market-leading matt clearcoats for repairing a wide range of gloss levels on matt and semimatt full-body colors.

"Matt finishes have increased in popularity with an increasing number of OEMs over the past few years, and it became clear to us that a special process would be needed to replicate the factory finish accurately," said Ron Thomas, PPG product platforms manager, EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa). "The two new clearcoats were developed to provide the basis for the concept, and then in collaboration with Mercedes-Benz [brand] the process was further developed to create a perfect result on darker colors and matt blacks." He said Renato Liano, PPG front-end evaluation manager, developed the dual-clear concept and then collaborated with Daimler AG to validate the overall process, which led to the approval from the Mercedes-Benz brand.

Body shops will benefit greatly, Thomas said, as the application and blending of the basecoat can still be carried out using existing processes, saving time and increasing efficiency over previous methods. The process provides an accurate match on the most difficult full-body matt colors and creates an easier, more effective and efficient process for matching the original finish and bringing overall repair time in line with that for conventional repairs, he added.

PPG Automotive Refinish is committed to working closely with automotive manufacturers to continuously provide repair processes and solutions for all new colors and special-effect finishes. The approval by Daimler AG of the new matt D8115 and D8117 clearcoats, and the collaboration with the Mercedes-Benz brand in the development of the dual-clear process, demonstrate this commitment.
