NPCA Meeting Keynote Talk "Just Does It"

Every important industry meeting should open with an address from someone outside the industry speaking on ethical business behavior, self worth and personal development. In the opening general session, the keynote speaker, Kevin Carroll of the sports show company Nike shared his "dream big!" formula for organizational nurturing. His holistic approach to developing human potential was described in terms of using "personal magic" and teaching others how to maximize their individual and corporate possibilities.

The one hour talk was organized around graphics that represented personal growth concepts For example, one graphic was a starfish. The concept behind the starfish was making a difference. This lead to a story of a youth and an old man on a beach after a storm. The youth was picking up beached starfish, and throwing them back in the ocean, while the old man was yelling "Why are you doing that -- it doesn't make any difference." As the youth threw each starfish back, he said "Made a difference to that one..." while studiously ignoring his elder.

Other icons included a bottle of magic (representing "your personal magic"), a light bulb (representing "your unique light"), an eye (to represent being in the moment,) and a handshake for "exchanging your brand", or an information exchange between individuals. Each of these topics was related to Carroll's thesis in a non-linear way, and audience members actually called the direction of the talk by shouting out icon names.

Each of these stories culminated in the concept of the d.r.e.a.m., to which there are 5 ingredients: dedication, responsibility, education, attitude and motivation. The last point made was through a Goethe quote: "Whatever you can do, or dream you can...begin it. Boldness has genius, power and magic in it."
