New Aliphatic Prepolymer from Bayer MaterialScience LLC for high build moisture cure Urethane Coatings

PITTSBURGH -- Contractors tasked with resurfacing North America's steel-based infrastructure and industry may find their jobs more manageable with the availability of a new aliphatic prepolymer from Bayer MaterialScience LLC. This prepolymer has been engineered specifically for high build moisture cure urethane (MCU) coatings used to protect structural steel in such corrosive environments as bridges, water and waste tanks, treatment plants, marine environments, chemical plants and offshore oil and gas piping refineries, among others.

Until now, the use of MCU topcoats has been limited by low-build films that made it difficult to achieve the required coating thickness, especially on complex structures with tight angles. Current commercial aliphatic MCU topcoats are typically applied between 2-3 mils dry film thickness (DFT). Over-applying a coating to hard-to-reach nooks in a bridge truss, for instance, can lead to blistering. Traditional MCUs also have technical limitations that force them to be used in cooler, damp climates. These challenges can lead to additional costs associated with field maintenance, as well as poor appearance.

The new aliphatic prepolymer engineered by Bayer MaterialScience offers improved sag resistance, which enables formulators to develop high build MCU topcoats that can be applied up to 8 mils DFT. These low volatile organic compound (VOC) topcoats not only avoid blistering, but can also be applied in hot and humid climates, making them a significant improvement over their predecessors.

"We set out to develop a coating technology that improved upon existing technology," said Ahren Olson, R&D specialist, Bayer MaterialScience LLC. "After several years and extensive testing we've developed a solution that allows applicators to use a high build MCU topcoat that makes their jobs a little easier. Additionally, this next generation of MCU topcoats expands the market into climates where traditional systems couldn't previously be used," continued Olson.
