Lean Manufacturing Initiative Underway at Raabe

Menomonee Falls, Wis.-The Raabe Corporation, with the assistance of the Wisconsin Manufacturing Extension Partnership (WMEP), is working on implementing the principles of lean manufacturing throughout the company.

Started in December 2003, Raabe and WMEP conducted a training session for 45 employees on general lean principles. "WMEP and their specialists are leading us through this process so we can gain the experience to map out other processes," said Rick Vanderkin, director of operations.

Currently, Raabe is working on the 5S System in their aerosol packaging and paint match departments, with plans to include other areas at a later date. A key factor to implementing the lean culture is listening to employees and their ideas about how things could run more efficiently. "Training employees and involving them in the changes has been critical to the success at Raabe up to this point," said Vanderkin. "When they create the ideas and make the changes, they know they are a part of a team."
