Imagine Intelligent Materials (Imagine IM), a pioneering Australian graphene manufacturer and creator of smart materials, has been announced as a finalist in the World Materials Forum Start-Up Challenge, to be held in Nancy, France, between June 27-29.

This is the third global start-up event Australia’s Imagine IM has been invited to participate in over the past three months, alongside Plug and Play in Silicon Valley and Startup Autobahn in Stuttgart, Germany.

Imagine IM has developed an inexpensive method for manufacturing graphene and dispersing it into coatings and inks at its factory in Geelong, a facility that received the Innovation, Research and Development Award from Engineers Australia in 2016. Imagine IM recently opened a European head office in Finland and, as a result of its participation in Plug and Play, is now in negotiations with some of the biggest companies in the world.

These companies, from diverse market verticals such as automotive, floor coverings, construction and roads, all recognize the value that can be realized by integrating sensing capabilities into materials.

Imagine IM has a smart-sensing geo-fabric product already in the market, produced at its Geelong industrial facility. The technology can be deployed in numerous applications. Initially it is being used to ensure that leaks can be identified and fixed in tailing dams, but the strategic goal is on delivering improved safety. The company has developed a prototype smart road, installed at its Geelong factory, which senses traffic movements and will be able to solve traffic management challenges.

The company’s aim is to be a part of the supply chains of a number of market verticals including the smart automotive supply chain, creating smart, sensing surfaces for the interior of vehicles.

Last year, the field of 12 finalists at the World Material Forum Start-Up Challenge included companies working in the areas of 3D manufacturing, chemicals, flexible electronics, advanced manufacturing, and battery development.

Extraordinary Achievement for Imagine Intelligent Materials

Chris Gilbey, CEO and Executive Chairman of Imagine IM, said, “We are all amazed and delighted to be recognized by the World Materials Forum as a leading innovation company. Just to be included as a finalist is an extraordinary achievement that is all down to the brilliant scientists and engineers in our team. I believe that we are in the early stages of a materials science revolution that will be utterly transformative. We are excited to be a part of this vision

Applications were received from all around the world for innovation projects that aligned with the World Materials Forum’s objective to decouple materials consumption and sustainable growth, while creating value for all stakeholders.

Imagine IM already has a smart-sensing geosynthetic product in the market, with the coating produced at its Geelong facility. It is also developing groundbreaking products for aged care facilities, the global shipping industry, and mass transit.
