IK4-CIDETEC Takes Part in COBRA Project to Develop High Corrosion Resistant Coatings

Published on 2013-10-08. Author : SpecialChem

IK4-CIDETEC forms part of the consortium of the COBRA project (Coatings for bipolar plates) recently approved within 7° PM. Throughout the project new bipolar plates for fuel cells will be developed for the automotive industry.

Through the development of new functional coatings, high corrosion resistant and low contact resistant bipolar plates will be created. The project includes different stages of material selection, definition and assessment of coating processes, and the evaluation of the behavior of the materials in the settings of fuel cells under actual working conditions and a technical-economic assessment for the mass production of the new bipolar plates.

IK4-CIDETEC will develop high corrosion resistant coatings for use in the said plates combining advanced electrodeposition technologies driven by current pulses and sol-gel deposition techniques. It will also carry out the characterization and assessment of the corrosion behavior of the coatings developed. Furthermore, IK4-CIDETEC will be participating in the study of the impact of the pollutants released from the bipolar plates and the behavior of the electrodes of the fuel cells during operation.

The project, of a marked multidisciplinary nature, is led by the CEA (Commissariat à l'énergie Atomique et aux énergies alternatives) and involves, besides IK4-CIDETEC, companies as renowned as Borit, Impact Coating, Symbio FCell. The presence in the consortium of major industrial partners and their strict orientation towards industrial requirements will facilitate the commercialization of the results obtained. It goes without saying that this project is of the utmost importance for the automotive industry as well as for boosting European competitiveness in the field.
