ICI has announced the appointment of Alan J Brown as Chief Financial Officer. Alan will be joining the company in November 2005 and will join the ICI Board at that time. Alan succeeds Tim Scott who tragically died in August 2005. Alan joins ICI from Unilever where he has had a distinguished career as a senior finance professional and general manager. Until recently Alan was Executive Chairman of Unilever China & Hong Kong.

Alan, 48, is a qualified barrister and accountant. He joined Unilever in 1980 and has spent time in Mergers and Acquisitions and Investor Relations before becoming Finance and Commercial Director of Birds Eye Walls UK in 1991 and Senior Vice President, Finance and IT for Unilever's European Food & Beverage division in 1994. He has worked extensively in Asia, mainland Europe and the UK and is married with three children.

John McAdam, Chief Executive of ICI commented: "I am delighted that ICI has been able to attract someone with Alan's breadth of knowledge and international experience. Alan joins ICI at an exciting time for the Group. The strategy we are pursuing is starting to deliver improved operating performance in mixed trading conditions. However, a great deal remains to be done and I am confident Alan will make a major contribution to our future success."

ICI is one of the world's major specialty products and paints businesses. The Group's four principal businesses are National Starch, Quest, Uniqema and ICI Paints, which together account for more than 90% of ICI's sales. ICI products today include flavours and starches for the food industry, fragrances, surfactants and specialty polymers for personal care products, adhesives for the electronics and packaging markets as well as a wide range of decorative coatings and specialty products for domestic use and the construction industry. Listed on both the London and New York Stock Exchanges, ICI is a member of the FTSE100, FTSE4Good and the Dow Jones Sustainability Index. ICI has around 33,000 employees worldwide and had sales in 2004 of 5.6 billion GBP.
