Grand View Research Analyzes Polyurea Coating's Applications & more in its Latest Report

Polyurea is a polymer; it is a result of the reaction of an amine-terminated polyether resin with isocyanate. This results in the formation of a rubber-like or plastic-like compound; it may be hard or soft depending on the formulation and intended use. Polyurea elastomer is formed through the reaction of an isocyanate component and a resin blend component. The resin blend comprises amine-terminated polymer resins; it may also contain amine-terminated chain extenders. Increasing demand for industrial coatings is expected to favorably impact the global polyurea market over the forecast period. These are mainly used for protecting steel structures and may exhibit fire-retardant properties. This can be attributed to a growing number of government construction projects as well as social housing programs. Polyurea can be processed through machine application (including spray coating and pouring/casting) or application by hand. Spray application involves using a machine with the correct mix ratio (1:1) of the isocyanate and polyamine components; cast processing makes use of a pouring gun. Favorable regulatory scenario is also expected to be a driver for the market. According to the EPA, Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) content in concrete coatings is 400 g/L. Since polyurea contains no VOCs, it is an environmentally friendly material for use in the construction sector. However, lack of standardization may be a barrier to industry growth. Pure polyurea coatings may be improperly specified; conversely, pure and hybrid polyurea may be marketed under the same name, resulting in dissatisfaction among buyers. There exists need for proper surface preparation, polyurea needs to be packaged as a technology along with primer and necessary technical support in order for it to realize its market potential.

Raw Material Insights

Polyurea may be aromatic or aliphatic in nature, this depends upon the iscocyanate component. Aromatic polyureas are produced by the presence of an aromatic diisocyanate such as MDI and TDI, while aliphatic polyureas are based on aliphatic diisocynates including IPDI and HDI. Aliphatic polyureas are light-stable; however, they are more difficult to process and retail at a higher price as opposed to their counterparts. Companies such as BASF are key suppliers of amines (polyetheramines) and amine chain extenders.

Product Insights

Coating accounted for over 60% of the overall polyurea market in 2013, and is expected to gain market share over the forecast period. Polyurea coating offers many advantages over traditional materials such as vinyl esters, fiberglass, epoxy and paint. Furthermore, they provide added benefits such as fast setting time, resistance to extreme atmospheric conditions and high elongation and tensile strength. Polyurea lining products possess high chemical resistance against many liquids with very low perm ratings, high build thickness characteristics and rapidly drying finishes. Polyurea lining systems provide numerous benefits and are used as alternative to fiberglass, epoxy and polyurethane.

Application Insights

Polyurea is most widely used in the construction industry; however, it is expected to witness high growth over the forecast period. Polyurea roofing membranes can be used in roofing for waterproofing, which can be attributed to its properties such as high resistance and flexibility. It can also be used for repairing concrete elements on bridge structures. For example, the San Mateo Bridge in San Franciso employed polyurea to achieve UV-stability and permeation resistance. Industrial flooring is subjected to heavy loads due to the use of forklifts and rlated machinery, as well as cleaning with aggressive industrial cleaners. Polyurea imparts climatic tolerance and rapid curing. This is particularly essential in flooring for sports facilities and coatings for parking garages.

Asia Pacific accounted for over 35% of the global market in 2013, and is expected to be the fastest growing regional segment by the end of the forecast period, mainly due to increased applications in construction, industrial and transportation sectors in the region. High growth potential for protection coatings in the automotive and industrial sectors of India and China is expected to drive the market in the region.
