Evonik to Present "Continuous Direct Polymerization" Process at the China Coat 2009

Published on 2009-11-17. Author : SpecialChem

After two years of engineering and construction, the production plant for thermoplastic methacrylic resins, as part of the MATCH project, in Shanghai is now completed. The plant is placing its stakes on the new Continuous Direct Polymerization (CDP™) process for making products used primarily as binders in the coating industry. These DEGALAN® products perform impressively in all areas of application that call for a superior level of weather resistance, colorfastness, and high brilliance.

"The CDP™ process combines the advantages of a continuous process with those of bulk polymerization, yielding products that are cost-effective and of a higher quality than those currently available on the market," explains Dr. Dirk Hoehler, who is in charge of the Coating Resins Product Line of Evonik. The chief applications for these products are in marine and container paints, plastic coatings, road markings, metal coatings, ceramic transfer lacquers, and printing inks.

With the new site in Shanghai, Evonik is strengthening its position as one of the leading suppliers of methacrylate-based raw materials for coatings in Asia.

A new generation of binders

Evonik will be showcasing its new production process in a presentation entitled "New Polymerization Technology for Manufacturing Solid Acrylic Resins," to be held at the China Coat show in Shanghai on November 19. In addition, the Coating Resins Product Line will be providing detailed information about this new generation of solid binders to visitors at the Evonik booth.

Beside the current CDPTM process innovation, Evonik also focuses on other markets with growth perspectives such as the Isophorone chemistry. "Isophorone and its Derivatives are core business for Evonik and look back at a long and successful history in our company. Customers do benefit from our advancements on economy of scale and our continuous developments in the field of technology and efficiency gains," says Ulrich Kuesthardt, President of the Coatings & Additives Business Unit. "Therefore", he adds, "we are ready for our next Isophorone and derivatives plant, as and when market requirements call for this."
