Environmentally friendly polyurethane technologies from Bayer MaterialScience LLC meet performance requirements of wood finishing market

PITTSBURGH -- Bayer MaterialScience LLC offers polyurethane technologies used to formulate wood and furniture coatings that are not only more environmentally friendly than traditional wood nitrocellulose (NC) and acid-curing (AC) coatings, but also meet the performance requirements the market demands.

There are a number of challenges currently facing the wood finishing industry. One having significant impact is environmental initiatives - such as California Air Resource Board (CARB) regulations, Greenguard&grade;, level&grade; and LEED certification, according to Robert Wade, Business Development, Coatings Adhesives and Specialties, Bayer MaterialScience LLC.

"Because of the new environmental initiatives, the wood finishing industry is in a state of flux, needing to identify new coating technologies and upgrade existing finishing lines," explained Wade. "Fortunately, Bayer MaterialScience LLC's new coatings technologies meet these new environmental requirements while also offering the performance characteristics the industry demands."

Three polyurethane technologies widely used to produce wood furniture coatings are:

  • Two-component solventborne polyurethanes (Desmophen® polyols and Desmodur® polyisocyanates)
  • Two-component waterborne polyurethanes (Bayhydrol® dispersions and Bayhydur® polyisocyanates)
  • One-component waterborne polyurethanes (Bayhydrol® dispersions)

These technologies have no added formaldehyde, and the waterborne technologies offer the added benefit of offering low volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

In addition to products used to formulate polyurethane coatings, Bayer MaterialScience LLC also supplies ultra-violet (UV)-curable technology - both waterborne (Bayhydrol® UV dispersions) and 100% solids (Desmolux® oligomers). The UV technology provides the added benefits of offering ultra-low VOCs, as well as increased productivity, which is particularly important to an industry facing increasing economic pressures, Wade points out.
