Published on 2012-04-26. Author : SpecialChem

CUYAHOGA FALLS, Ohio -- Emerald Kalama Chemical, a division of Emerald Performance Materials, announced that it is expanding capacity for its PUROX® B pure grade benzoic acid at its facility in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. The 20 kilo-ton flake capacity expansion will support increased market demand in the food and beverage, pharmaceutical, coatings and other industrial segments. The new flaker production unit is scheduled to be commissioned at the beginning of 2013.

PUROX B is available in several grades - PUROX B food/pharma, PUROX B pure grade and technical grade. The high- purity grades of material have low impurity content and meet the Ph.Eur, USP/NF, FCC and JP requirements and are also GRAS classified. Production of liquid benzoic acid will not be impacted by the increased flake capacity.

"Benzoic acid represents the core of ourmanufacturing process and is the foundation for many of our products at Emerald Kalama Chemical," said Edward T. Gotch, President. "In recent years, we have invested heavily, both from a technology and operations standpoint, in our benzoic acid operations, as well as in our other downstream derivatives and specialties. This is the second major expansion we have made in Rotterdam since we acquired the DSM Special Products business less than 18 months ago."

The company has long been a recognized leader in the benzoate business, focused on benzoic acid, benzaldehyde, benzyl alcohol and sodium benzoate. The Rotterdam operation is certified to a number of important quality standards, including ISO-9001, ISO-14001, HACCP, and FamiQS. The company recently announced that it had begun construction of a new K-FLEX® non-phthalate plasticizers operation, which utilizes key starting materials that are also produced at the site. The K-FLEX expansion in Rotterdam is on schedule to be completed in the third quarter of this year.

"We continue to experience growing demand for our PUROX B brand of benzoic acid materials, because customers prefer its performance advantages, including high purity, low impurity content, low odor level and reduced caking properties and improved color of the end product," added Hubert Degens, Vice President and General Manager of benzoates and intermediates for Emerald Kalama Chemical. The increase in our PUROX B benzoic acid flake production is critical to supporting the growing needs of our customers and allows us to take advantage of the additional reactor and purification capacity available in Rotterdam, which has proven to be an ideal location from which to serve our customers throughout the world. Rotterdam is the largest port in Europe with outstanding connections to the rest of the world, enabling us to provide effective logistics solutions to EMEA customers, as well as those on other continents."

Benzoic acid is used in a wide range of applications. It is sold in both liquid (molten) and flake form in ultra-pure, high-purity and technical grades. Benzoic acid and its sodium and potassium salts have been extensively used for years as an effective preservative to control microbial growth, such as yeast, bacteria, mold and fungi, in various applications. The products are FDA-approved and GRAS-classified.

Benzoic acid also provides a range of functions in industrial applications and is a key intermediate for synthesis of a wide range of chemicals, including benzoyl chloride, propiophenone, caprolactam, photo-initiators, esters and polyamide. Benzoic acid is additionally used as a chain terminator in the production of alkyd resins to improve gloss, adhesion, hardness and chemical resistance of the final product. Benzoic acid is added to synthetic polyester fibers to improve finish. Incorporation of benzoic acid in HDPE filaments and thermoplastic lassoers results in high-strength filaments. Other applications include use as a corrosion inhibitor in automotive cooling liquids and as an additive in down-hole mud drilling.

Emerald Kalama Chemical also produces sodium and potassium benzoate, benzoic acid and intermediates, K-FLEX non-phthalate plasticizers and coalescents, and specialty flavor and fragrance ingredients at its facility in Kalama, Washington USA, and sells them globally through its various distribution partners. Emerald Kalama Chemical products are used in a range of applications, from beverage preservatives to personal care and household products, as well as industrial applications.
