SITTARD, NL -- DSM will showcase a comprehensive range of resin-based technologies for paints and coatings applications, including a number of new product introductions for the China market at its stand, during Chinacoat 2008, Guangzhou November 26th-28th. The company will focus on its contribution to sustainable coating solutions which will feature its market leading range of waterborne resins as well as hosting a new DSM Resins Asia Sustainability Award which will be presented to a Chinese paints or ink manufacturer recognized for its role in leading the transition to waterborne based systems in China.

"DSM is committed to sustainable development in China and we believe green and environmentally-friendly processes and materials are the way forward for global development, and are essential elements in China's development", commented Mr. Jiang Weiming, President, DSM China. "At Chinacoat 2008, we are looking forward to presenting our inaugural DSM Resins Asia Sustainability Award to the company we believe that is leading the way in the switch to more environmentally responsible waterborne coatings and inks in China."

The award will be presented following a press conference at a special ceremony in Guangzhou held on the evening of Wednesday 26th November.

During the show, DSM will display a comprehensive range of resin products and technologies for applications in paints, coatings and inks. Key highlights will feature a number of new introductions to the Chinese market from the DSM NeoResins+ business, including:

NeoRad U-30W is a UV curable resin for use in primers & stains for industrial parquet and industrial wood.

NeoRez R-2005 is a waterborne urethane for use in combination with waterborne acrylics for high-performance topcoats. It is NMP and APEO free.

NeoCryl A-1125 is a self crosslinking waterborne acrylic resin solution with excellent printability, adhesion and chemical resistance properties. The product is targeted as a blending resin to improve the printability performance of high performance inks for printing flexo and gravure on flexible packaging substrates (PE,BOPP,PET etc). The product is advised to be combined with NeoCryl A-1127 and A-1120.

NeoRez U-471 is an elastomeric aliphatic solvent urethane for high performance flexo and gravure laminating inks. The product is suitable for a wide variety of substrate combinations and provides excellent bondstrengths in most laminates. The product is suitable for pigment grinding resulting in inks that can resist sterilization and pasteurization treatments.

Waterborne acrylic resins can be used in water-based coatings which do not require volatile organic compounds or solvents, such as VOCs, which have negative effects on the environment as well as presenting occupational health hazards to painters and users. Most waterborne paint contains only a very small percentage of organic solvents and both the resin and the paint are not hazardous. Waterborne paints have virtually the same performance these days as solvent based paints, for most applications. This means that the paint can be easy applied, cured in the same way and delivers the same gloss, durability and scratch resistance as a solvent borne paint.

Although China currently represents a small market for specialty waterborne resins, DSM has good expectations for these resins for the industrial wood & metal coatings as well as for the adhesives and graphic arts markets. The company has recently invested euro 20 million in the construction of a new factory in the province of Guangdong on the existing site of DSM Syntech, which will be dedicated to waterborne resins.

Peter Pui, General Manager DSM NeoResins+ said: "This investment reflects our commitment to the Chinese market and means we will be able to offer our waterborne acrylic resins worldwide. Chinacoat 2008 will be an important event for DSM and allow us to demonstrate to the local Chinese and Asian market our leadership and expertise in resin technology for coatings and inks"

Further underlining its commitment to advancing more environmentally responsible coatings, DSM will also be sponsoring the best paper award in waterborne coatings presented by the Chinacoat show organizers, Sinostar, during the show conference to be held on Monday 24th and Tuesday 25th of November.

DSM is also building a major centralised R&D campus in Shanghai, Pudong to drive innovation and technology in support of all its businesses in China and DSM is expected to move into this facility in early 2009.
