Dow Corning Corporation will offer a technical seminar about the use of organosilanes in coating applications at ABRAFATI 2005, the 9th International Paint Congress in São Paulo, Brazil.

Dr. Thierry Materne, from Dow Corning's Surface and Interface Solutions Center (SISC), will present Wednesday, September 14, 2005, from 3:00-3:50 p.m. in room D2 of the ITM-Expo Center. The paper will review the fundamentals of organosilane chemistry and its relevance to various coating applications, including the use of organosilanes in primers, industrial maintenance coatings, automotive clear-coats and architectural coatings.

"As the demands for performance increase, coatings formulators are burdened with ever-tightening environmental protection regulations, like the need to reduce heavy metals, VOCs and other hazardous materials," explained Materne. "This creates opportunities for raw material suppliers of high performance, compliant technologies."

The unique capability of organosilane molecules to form covalent bonds between inorganic and organic compounds, along with the inherent stability and flexibility of the siloxane bond, give these molecules wide utility in many types of coating systems. The paper reports that recent experimental evidence shows the importance of the interphase design and control to optimize coating adhesion properties, viscoelastic properties, and scratch and abrasion resistance.

"Organosilanes are key building blocks in the construction of this interface/interphase and as such have the potential to tremendously impact final composite performances," said Materne. New technologies will be developed with the objective of controlling and optimizing this interphase region to deliver optimum composite properties to the end-user. "Dow Corning will continue to leverage the capabilities of our Surface and Interface Solutions Center to support the coatings market with new resources and innovative solutions in this area," he added.

Materne joined Dow Corning in 2003 as the company's global silane technology and business development manager. He is responsible for the organization and management of Dow Corning's SISC in Belgium and the development of new business partnerships. After receiving a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Liege, Belgium, in 1991, Materne held positions with Granges Eurofoil S.A. and The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company before joining Dow Corning. His technical expertise includes material and compound research of polymers, fillers, coupling agents, core-shell, curatives, composites, thermoplastics and nanotechnologies.
