Dow Announces Price Increase for Ethylene Oxide

Midland, MI -- The Dow Chemical Company has announced that effective December 1, 2004, it will increase prices of its ethylene oxide (EO). Prices will increase by $0.06/lb in North America.

This price increase is in addition to the $0.05/lb increase announced to be effective on Sept. 1, 2004.

"North American EO supply remains very tight, and all indicators point to continued high glycol and EO derivative demand creating even tighter supply through 1Q 2005," said John O. Smith, commercial manager, ethylene oxide and higher glycols, for Dow's oxides and glycols business. "In addition, ethylene costs and potential constraints on availability - including several announced manufacturer plant turnarounds - are placing upward pressure on EO prices."

Dow is the leading global producer of ethylene oxide (EO), a major chemical building block in the production of ethylene glycol (EG), diethylene glycol (DEG), triethylene glycol (TEG) and tetra ethylene glycol (tetra) and other chemicals. While approximately 60 percent of Dow's total EO capacity is used for EG production, Dow also uses EO to make a number of derivative products. End products in which these EO derivatives are used include surfactants and detergents for home laundry and dishwashing formulations, polyester and polyether polyols for numerous plastic products, polyurethane foams for the furniture market, gas conditioning products, and agricultural chemicals.

Dow is a leader in science and technology, providing innovative chemical, plastic and agricultural products and services to many essential consumer markets. With annual sales of $33 billion, Dow serves customers in more than 180 countries and a wide range of markets that are vital to human progress, including food, transportation, health and medicine, personal and home care, and building and construction, among others. Committed to the principles of sustainable development, Dow and its approximately 46,000 employees seek to balance economic, environmental and social responsibilities.
