Degussa takes up Planning for an Additional Production Unit in Herne

Published on 2004-11-15. Author : SpecialChem

Degussa AG of Dusseldorf has begun basic planning on a new production line for isophorone products at its site in Herne, Germany. The unit, which is intended for the production of the solvent isophorone and its derivatives, concerns an investment in the high double-digit million euro range. Once the planning work has been completed, construction of the unit, which is to take up operation in 2007, has to be authorized by the Management Board and Supervisory Board of Degussa.

With its Coatings & Colorants Business Unit, Degussa is the global market leader in all stages of isophorone chemistry, and already operates two other isophorone production lines in Herne as well as one in Mobile, Alabama.

Isophorone and its derivatives are used in many different areas. While isophorone is mainly used as a solvent in the formulation of industrial paints, derivatives such as isophorone diamine and isophorone diisocyanate find use in solvent-free coatings for industrial flooring and in the production of light- and weatherstable automotive paints as well as high-quality parts for automotive interiors.

Degussa is a multinational corporation consistently aligned to highly profitable specialty chemistry. In fiscal 2003, its 47,000 employees generated sales of €11.4 billion and operating profits (EBIT) of €878 million, making it Germany's third-largest chemical company and the global market leader in specialty chemicals. Innovative products and system solutions enable Degussa to play a valuable and indispensable role in the success of its customers, as summed up by our claim "creating essentials".
