Crown Introduces New Printing Process and Finishes to Boost Brand Communication on Metal Closures

Published on 2008-05-02. Author : SpecialChem

Philadelphia, PA -- Brand owners can now add differentiation to the metal closures used to top off their food and beverage products with several external novel finishes and a special ink that allows printing on the cap's interior from Crown Holdings, Inc.

Crown's new finishes include a matte, metallic sparkle and a special colour-changing lacquer that instantly changes with a simple turn of the package. The finishes can withstand pasteurized and, in some cases, sterilised filling processes, while ensuring the caps have the right look to complement the contents of the pack. The new material systems are flexible enough to withstand the forming process during cap manufacturing and tough enough to avoid damage during transport, cap application, processing and handling.

"As the part of the package that is most often handled by consumers, the way a closure looks has a great impact on brand perception," says Sheila Heath, Director of Marketing, CROWN Closures USA. "Crown's new capabilities expand the branding possibilities and help brand owners better convey product messaging."

Crown is also introducing a new special ink, to print on the inside of metal closures. This FDA and EU compliant material provides an additional platform for extra branding by allowing the communication of promotional messages.

"Our main challenge was finding an ink that could safely be used in food contact applications, meeting both FDA and EU legislation," says Jason Hegarty, New Product and Marketing Manager, CROWN Closures Europe. "We achieved a successful market launch by targeting brand owners looking to implement distinctive in-cap promotions that further enhance brand appeal, as well as increase customer loyalty."

Agros Nova, a leading Polish manufacturer of juices, nectars, jams, and sauces, is one of the first to adopt Crown's new capability. A series of cultural messages are printed inside the twist cap of its Tarczyn brand fruit juices, as part of a permanent brand-building promotion.

The special finishes were developed through Crown's Research and Development Centre in Wantage, UK, where the company has a dedicated Innovation Team supported by a network of technology specialists. The internal printing development was managed within Crown's Goleniow facility in Poland.
