Cognis : "Green" Solutions for the Water-Based Paints and Coatings Industry

Published on 2009-02-20. Author : SpecialChem

MONHEIM -- These days, outstanding performance and environmental soundness are key requirements for interior decoration and architectural coatings. At the 2009 European Coatings Show (ECS), Cognis' Functional Products Strategic Business Unit will be presenting a broad variety of solutions that help manufacturers of paints and coatings to benefit from these trends. These will include new "green" defoamers, new highly efficient rheology modifiers, "green" dispersing agents, and a natural oil-based coalescent for water-based coatings.

Users of coatings, paints and varnishes demand solutions that are environmentally sustainable without sacrificing performance or quality. Cognis gives manufacturers a competitive advantage by enabling them to meet these requirements. Its product range offers a unique combination of efficacy, ease of use and environmental benefits. The emphasis is very much on zero VOC solutions for water based coatings.

At the show, Cognis will present a range of new "green" defoamers based on renewable raw materials. They offer a state-of-the-art performing and eco-friendly alternative to mineral oil defoamers for a wide range of water-based architectural paints. Peter Bene, Product Development Manager Coating Additives, will be giving a presentation on "Green defoamer solutions for architectural paints" at 12:10 p.m. on April 2. Because the products contain no VOCs (volatile organic compounds) and only very low levels of SVOCs (semi-volatile organic compounds), they enable manufacturers to obtain environmental quality and safety certifications such as the EU Eco-Label, the Blue Angel or the German TÜV seal.

In response to the demand for environmentally sound products, Cognis has also developed a unique range of patented nonionic highly efficient associative thickeners for water-based coatings. Harald Frommelius, Product Development Manager Coating Additives, will be talking about Cognis' "New easy-to-use, highly efficient rheology modifiers" for building low and high-shear viscosity with superior performance at 3:10 p.m. on March 31. Based on polyurethane derivatives they are completely free of hazardous solvents and heavy metals and of course VOC and odour free. Cognis rheology modifiers enable product formulators to achieve rheological profiles ranging from Newtonian (for brush coatings) to highly pseudoplastic (for spray coatings).

Another group of products on show will be "green" wetting and dispersing agents for aqueous coatings. These are free from environmentally harmful solvents and alkylphenolethoxylates (APEOs), and are suitable for use in a wide range of applications, from pigment combinations to emulsion paints for both architectural and industrial use.

Cognis will also showcase a natural oil-based coalescent. Compared to competitor products, it is significantly more efficient in lowering the minimum film forming temperature (MFFT) and enables exterior coatings to harden faster and to improve dirt pick-up and scratch resistance.

Performing and environmental compatible

Says Paula Gómez Perea, Senior Marketing Manager FP Europe: "Thanks to our expertise in water-based architectural coatings, we can offer natural-source products that combine excellent performance with environmental soundness. This helps our customers to increase their sales by serving the sustainability trend, driven by both consumer demand and regulatory changes."
