Cognis at the European Coatings Show 2007: sustainable, high-performance solutions for the paints and coatings industry

Published on 2007-02-14. Author : SpecialChem

Monheim -- At the 2007 European Coatings show to be held May 8 through 10 in Nuremberg, Germany, Cognis' Functional Products business unit will be presenting market-ready concepts for a variety of applications in the paints, coatings and inks industry. Among these will be the Sovermol® range of naturally sourced, solvent-free polyols, and the latest Waterpoxy® environmentally sound epoxy coatings systems. Other Cognis innovations that will be the subject of presentations at the show include: a new rheology modifier, based on Cognis' patented star technology; new concepts for environmentally friendly film-forming additives; and a new defoamer based on vegetable oil.

In recent years, interest in environmentally sound paints and varnishes, and especially in solvent free and aqueous systems, has risen rapidly. In the market for protective coatings for wind turbines, environmental soundness is a key consideration, and the market is growing rapidly. Thorsten Roloff, Technical Manager Coating Resins, will be giving a presentation on Sovermol, a range of naturally sourced polyols from Cognis Functional Products that anticipate the industry's future requirements, placing Cognis customers at the cutting edge of both performance and sustainability. Sovermol polyols give turbines, and especially turbine blades, lasting protection against various environmental factors, including dust and acid or alkaline rain, and they also prevent yellowing. At the same time, they offer outstanding mechanical properties, with excellent adhesion and high rupture resistance.

Epoxy coatings have long been used to provide protection against corrosion, especially in architectural applications, because of their chemical resistance and mechanical strength. Thorsten Roloff's presentation will also look at the Waterpoxy range of products, which enables manufacturers to offer environmentally sound coatings that serve the trend towards sustainability and fulfill all regulatory requirements, while also improving the performance of thick and thin coating and flooring systems.

Another range of products on prominent display at the Cognis booth will be the Versamine S curing agents for marine and civil engineering protective coatings. In these markets, speed of application is vital. Coatings with Versamine S curing agents boast exceptionally short curing times, and excellent adhesion even to imperfectly prepared substrates, meaning that the equipment can return to service sooner, reducing downtimes and improving profitability for the end user.

Heinz-Günther Schulte, Senior Technology Manager Technology Coating Additives, will be speaking about a new Cognis defoamer derived from vegetable oil. This reduces coatings' VOC (volatile organic compound) emissions so that they can obtain industry certifications that make them easier to market (for example, in Germany, coatings that incorporate the new defoamer should be classified as low-hazard decorative paints, having passed an SVOC test run by TÜV, a leader in independent testing and assessment services). The new defoamer combines superior environmental compatibility with the easy handling, storage stability and efficacy of conventional alternatives.

Thomas van der Koelen, Technical Manager Architectural Coating Additives, will be at the show to provide information about a new associative rheology modifier from Cognis Functional Products. It is based on Cognis' patented star technology and provides excellent handling and application performance in all aqueous formulations like paints, adhesives and printing inks. The new thickener is free from VOCs, APEOs and heavy metals, which makes it ideal for use in environmentally sound interior and exterior paints and varnishes.

Harald Frommelius, Technical Manager Coating Additives, will be in Nuremberg to introduce the latest additions to Cognis' range of environmentally sound film-formation additives. The new coalescing agents are based on oleochemical raw materials, allowing paint manufacturers to comply with the "Deco Paint Directive" and the EPA method 24 VOC regulation, while also improving performance.

Combining sustainability, performance, and cost benefits

Cognis Functional Products has always focused on providing the paints, coatings and inks market with natural-source products that combine excellent performance, environmental soundness and cost-effectiveness. Says Patrice Pinsard, Vice President Marketing and Business Development Functional Products: "Ever-stricter environmental regulations, as well as consumer demand for environmentally sound products, have resulted in a strong trend towards sustainability. However, consumers are not prepared to sacrifice performance in pursuit of greater environmental compatibility. Cognis recognized these developments several years ago, and we have built our business on providing our industrial customers with solutions that serve these trends, thereby enabling them to achieve both technological leadership and increased sales in their consumer markets."
