Cognis at Eurocoat 2006: Improving performance, enhancing sustainability

Published on 2006-10-09. Author : SpecialChem

At the 2006 Eurocoat trade show in Barcelona, Spain, Cognis' Polymers, Coatings and Inks (PCI) business unit presented market-ready concepts and solutions in a variety of areas. These included the company's award-winning Disponil® AFX environmentally friendly surfactant systems, the new mineral-oil-free Foamaster® 350 liquid defoamer, and Perenol® S 57, a 100-percent active matter, silicone-based slip modifier and leveling agent for printing inks, coatings and paints. Cognis' broad-based chemical and surface technology expertise enables it to deliver customized solutions that offer benefits in the areas of environmental sustainability, application reliability, consumer safety and product performance.

Cognis presented its Disponil® AFX surfactant systems, an environmentally sound alternative to alkylphenol ethoxylates (APEs) that are traditionally employed for industrial processes such as the manufacture of polymer dispersions. The product was awarded the Federation of German Industries (BDI)'s 2005/2006 environmental award. Using the Cognis product puts manufacturers in a position to apply for environmental certifications, such as the EU Eco-label for paints and varnishes used in domestic interior decoration. Disponil AFX, which is made from renewable raw materials, consists of non-ionic emulsifiers and is comparable to APEs in terms of both performance and cost-effectiveness. As such, Disponil AFX is an excellent example of how an environmentally responsible approach need not compromise performance, and can in fact provide real competitive advantages.

Environmentally sound defoamers combine performance and sustainablity

The Eurocoat show also saw the launch of Cognis' Foamaster® 350, a liquid, mineral-oil free defoamer based on renewable raw materials. This new defoamer is ideally suited for use in the manufacture of synthetic latex, water-based matt to satin-finished (architectural) coatings, plasters, and aqueous adhesives. Foamaster 350 displays remarkable performance characteristics: it retains its defoaming capabilities even after prolonged storage of the paint, and it boasts an excellent ratio of performance and cost. Two other mineral-oil-free defoamers were also on display. Foamaster® 361 is a universal defoamer that can easily be incorporated at any stage of the manufacturing process. FoamStar® EF 332, meanwhile, does not contain any solids, and consequently can be used in liquid formulations without forming a creamy layer during storage. It is also an alternative to replace Tributylphosphate (TBP). This range of natural-source defoamers offers further proof of Cognis' unique expertise in "green" chemistry, serving the trend towards greater sustainability and reducing manufacturers' dependence on the petrochemical industry.

Highly efficient silicone-based additives

High-quality surface coatings and inks are becoming increasingly popular in consumer, industrial and graphic arts applications. To meet this growing demand, Cognis has introduced a new additive called Perenol® S 57. The 100-percent silicone based additive significantly increases surface tension in UV-based systems and exhibits extraordinary wetting capabilities even when used on critical substrates. Perenol S 57 also improves surface slip which enhances scratch resistance in a variety of systems. It helps to reduce orange-peel effects and increase gloss values. Effective even in very low concentrations, Perenol S 57 is suitable for use in UV-based systems and water/solvent-based coatings and inks.

Helping customers to anticipate market demand and regulatory requirements

Cognis' business strategy is driven by the company's knowledge of consumer demands, which enables manufacturers to develop products that serve current and future trends in their markets. In particular, Cognis has made the decision to concentrate on the trends of sustainability, convenience and well-being and focused its innovation efforts on these areas. Comments Simon Poulton, Global Market Manager Emulsion Polymerization: "Here at the 2006 Eurocoat show, Cognis has exhibited a range of products and solutions that reflect our strategic vision of combining environmental compatibility with performance and cost benefits. They help our customers fulfill regulatory requirements and commercial imperatives, and thereby give them a competitive edge in their markets."
