THANE -- The Coating - Pigments Business Clariant Chemicals (India) Limited recently showcased its capabilities on Pigments for Architectural Coatings. At a seminar organized by the Indian Small Scale Paint Association (ISSPA) Kerala Region and in the previous month during the Paintindia conference in Pune, Mr. Nitin Vaidya, Senior Technical Manager, Coating Business, India spoke on Pigments for Architectural Coatings.

He addressed two significant subjects in his presentation. The first was the concept of Easily Dispersible (ED) Pigments, wherein he spoke of a special range of pigments which go through a different manufacturing process and are available in a form which can be wetted and dispersed much easily than conventional pigments. He also shared the properties and advantages of these special pigments; described the paint formulation and manufacturing process using these ED pigments; while the second part of the presentation touched upon low-VOC colorants and pigment pastes.

Mr. Tej Dialani, Head of Sales, Coating Business, commented, "The paint industry is very much on the growth path for both Decorative as well as the Industrial sector in India. This gives us an opportunity to promote new products from our global range to customers which helps them to save time, energy and costs, apart from creating value additions".

  1. Easily Dispersible (ED) Pigments - The New Option: Pigment dispersing is a very specialized, time consuming and expensive process, which requires high-priced technical equipment and know-how. To simplify the grinding process, Clariant has developed special organic pigments which can be easily incorporated into paint systems with a dissolver, thereby lowering the paint manufacturing cost. ED pigments can be dispersed with high speed dissolver using cowles blade and no additional milling is required. To achieve optimum color and strength on high speed dissolver, the pigment goes through a special surface treatment with a high efficiency and wide compatibility additive during the manufacturing process. ED pigment can also be dispersed using bead mills at reduced dispersion time compared to that required for conventional pigments. ED pigment does not require dispersants for the formulation. The three ranges of ED pigments that are available today, viz: EDS for solvent borne coating (10 products), EDU for solvent and water borne coatings (4 products) and EDW for water borne coatings (5 products).
  2. Colorant with low VOC for environmental paint tinting system: Today, most interior and exterior paints are found to have high levels of VOCs, which help them to dry faster. But, these VOCs emit smog-forming chemicals into the air and thus become the major contributor to ground-level ozone pollution. These release low-level emissions into the air for years after the application. And the major source of these toxins is a variety of volatile organic compounds, which until recently, were essential to the performance of the paint.

The new environmental regulations have resulted in alternative solutions - Low VOC and Zero VOC paints. Lower VOC paints preserve both indoor and outdoor air quality and reduce the incidence of eye or respiratory irritation from exposure to VOC fumes. Clariant has developed two new ranges viz. Colanyl 500 and Hostatint 500 pigment preparations with low VOC for environmental friendly paint systems. Both the ranges are binder free and APEO free and can be used for in-plant tinting and in Point-of-Sale machines (POS).

We currently offer 20 organic, nine inorganic preparations and one extender from Colanyl 500 range for all kinds of water based paint decorative coatings. Hostatint 500 range comprises of 17 organic, 9 inorganic and two extenders for water-based and solvent-based decorative coatings. Overall the conference was a success and the participants looked forward to many more such interesting and relevant technical detailing in the future.
