Clariant at the Asian Pacific Coatings Show 2007

Muttenz, Switzerland, -- From June 6 to 8, the APCS (Asian Pacific Coatings Show) will be held at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre in Bangkok, Thailand. At Stand B1 the Clariant Pigments & Additives Division will showcase innovations for coatings, paints, sealants, and adhesives.

Rebranding of all products containing the syllable "SAND"

As a consequence of Clariant's spin-off from Sandoz in 1995, the Pigments & Additives Division of Clariant was required to change the brand names of its products starting with the syllable "SAND". Effective January 1, 2007, products of the Sanduvor® range were changed to Hostavin®, and Sandostab® to Hostanox®. The subsequent letter or number combination defining the products remains unchanged.

DPP Pigments - delivering top quality in red

Hostaperm® Red D2G 70 and Hostaperm® Red D3G 70, the two high-performance red pigments based on diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) chemistry, were both successfully established in the market and are now widely accepted by customers from the industrial coatings and automotive sector. The high-value red pigments stand out by their excellent property profile. They are also available as preparations (Colanyl® Red D3GD 500).

Pigment preparations - offering an alternative for many applications

Colanyl® 500: This large range of especially environmentally friendly pigment preparations (APEO- and VOC-free according to RAL ZU 102) is suitable for coloring emulsion paints for façades and interiors that comply with the requirements of the German "Blue Angel" eco label and the EU Decopaint Directive 2010. The special formulation of Clariant pigment preparations and their narrow specification make them also suitable for automatic dosing and mixing equipment. Recent studies have shown that Colanyl® 500 pigment preparations are compatible with numerous water-based coating systems.

Under the trade name Hostatint® A 100 Clariant offers a series of solvent-based pigment preparations that were specially developed for industrial coatings. The pigment selection is based on Clariant's large range of pigments for the industrial coatings market. The carrier material is a special alkyd resin that offers almost universal compatibility with all types of solvent-based coatings. The solvents and additives were carefully selected in order to avoid the required labeling or special storage regulations for flammable materials. The Hostatint® A 100 range replaces the proven Sandosperse® A brands while maintaining the optimal pigmentation level and good rheological properties. It is also a suitable substitute for many Sandalkyd® preparations.

Water-based wood stains and coatings with low VOC content are important reformulation alternatives to conventional solvent-based coating systems. With the Hostafine® pigment preparations, Clariant developed ideal colorants for water-based wood stains and coatings. With their ultra fine dispersion, Hostafine® pigment preparations combine the high transparency, color strength and brilliance of colorants with the superior lightfastness and migration resistance of pigments in a unique way.

Coating production with ED pigments - reducing costs and optimizing productivity

Pigment dispersion is a highly specialized, time- and cost-intensive process for which costly technical equipment is needed. To simplify this process, Clariant has developed special pigments that can be worked into solvent-based coating systems in a much easier way than comparable conventional pigments. The ED-pigments ("easily dispersible") can be mixed in with a dissolver. The ease of dispersibility is based on a special manufacturing process in which the pigments are treated with a highly effective and widely compatible additive.

The production of coatings with ED pigments offers major advantages over the conventional production method, which includes a milling step. The simplified process reduces the production costs and increases productivity. ED pigments can also be dispersed with the aid of bead milling equipment. The dispersion time is significantly shorter than for conventional pigments, and it is not necessary to add dispersion additives. ED pigments can be used in many conventional solvent-based coating systems, such as melamine-crosslinked enamel, air-drying coatings, and 2K-reactiv systems.

New Licocene® - improving adhesion on powder coatings

Licocene® PP 1502 fine grain is a new member of Clariant's Licocene® family. With its special physical and chemical properties, this additive for powder coatings considerably improves the adhesion of silicon-based products on powder coatings. In addition, it is slipresistant and thus improves the handling of powder-coated products. Like all other Licocene® products, Licocene® PP 1502 fine grain is manufactured by metallocene catalysis and features a property profile that is perfectly tailored to each individual application.

Exolit® AP - guaranteeing the best possible fire protection

Under the motto "the one and only original Phase II APP", the Pigments & Additives Division presents the innovative flame retardant system Exolit® AP. It is based on ammonium polyphosphate (AP), which is non-halogenated and easy to process. Exolit® AP has very low water solubility and meets all current requirements for environmentally friendly and highly effective fire protection. One special feature of the Exolit® AP types is their low smoke density, and no build-up of additional corrosive gases in case of a fire. But Exolit® AP not only significantly reduces emissions in case of a fire; it also does not migrate but remains permanently in the system.

With the AP 417, 422, 423, 462, 463, as well as the 74x and 75x series, many different modifications, mixtures of synergists, and special formulations are available, so the Exolit® AP system covers a wide range of applications. A preferred area of application is the use in various intumescent coatings. Clariant recommends the AP range especially for fire protection of steel structures, wood, cable lines, sealants and adhesives. But Exolit® AP also effectively protects paper, textiles, leather, and coatings of any thickness. Other areas of application are thermoplastics and thermosets, such as cast resins systems, laminates, and gel coats, as well as PUR foams.

Pigments for printing inks - opening new horizons in pink, carmine or ruby red

Novoperm® Yellow HN4G (C.I. Pigment Yellow 150) from Clariant is a green-shade Azo nickel complex pigment. It features very good lightfastness and overall fastness properties as well as excellent heat resistance. Pigment Yellow 150 is the established standard Colour Index for a green shade yellow to be used in water-based decorative gravure printing inks.

Permanent Yellow P-GRL 07 (C.I. Pigment Yellow 13) is a highly transparent and high-gloss diarylide yellow pigment of the P series, which stands out by its very low specific conductivity (< 0,2 mS/cm). Clariant especially recommends it for NC-alcohol- und NC-ester systems. The improved rheological properties meet the trend towards ink concentrates with high pigment loading.

Novoperm® Yellow P-HRE (C.I. Pigment Yellow 83) is a new, highly transparent reddish yellow pigment with low specific conductivity (< 0,2mS/cm). It was especially developed by the Pigments & Additives Division for monosolvent NC-ester formulations. In these inks, it shows excellent strength, gloss and transparency. The low viscosity of P-HRE in NC-ester systems allows the preparation of mill bases with high pigment loading.

Permanent Yellow DHG N26 (C.I. Pigment Yellow 12) is a red-shaded diarylide yellow pigment for publication gravure ink manufacturing. It exhibits high color strength and outstanding gloss, as well as low strike-through and excellent storage stability.

Permanent Carmine P-FBB 04 (C.I. Pigment Red 146) from the Pigments & Additives Division is a blue shaded Naphthol AS pigment with good fastness properties. Although it was developed for solvent-based liquid printing inks, it can also be used for water-based packaging inks as well as paste inks.

Permanent Pink F3B 01 (C.I. Pigment Red 147) is a Naphthol AS-based red pigment with an intensive blue shade. It features excellent color strength, gloss, and transparency and also good fastness properties. Clariant offers Permanent Pink F3B 01 for paste inks as well as solventbased and water-based packaging gravure and flexographic printing inks.

Permanent Rubine F6B 01 (C.I. Pigment Red 184) from the Pigments & Additives Division is a blue-shade, semi-transparent Naphthol AS pigment with good fastness properties. It is an alternative for Pigment Red 57:1 pigments, if their fastness properties are not sufficient. It is recommended for paste inks as well as for solvent- and water based packaging gravure and flexographic printing inks.

Permanent Rubine LPM (C.I. Pigment Red 57:1) from Clariant is a transparent, blue-shade calcium-laked BONS red pigment that is especially recommended for lithographic printing inks. Permanent Rubine LPM meets the requirements for process magenta according to ISO 2846-1 and -2.

Innovative Licocene® - revolutionizing the world of hot-melt adhesives

In the formulation of hot-melt adhesives, the innovative Licocene® from Clariant open new horizons. All products feature a high level of cohesion and adhesion, good compatibility and outstanding thermal stability. The properties of these high-performance polymers are also tailored to each individual application. For example, amorphous Licocene such as TP Licocene® PP 1302, 1502, 1602 and 2602 have extraordinary adhesive strength. They can be used even for difficult substrates, such as polypropylene or polyethylene therephthalate, with relatively little effort.

High-melting crystalline types such as Licocene® PP 4202, 6102 or Licocene® PE 4201 as well as Licocene® PPA 330, a completely amorphous and thus liquid polypropylene, round off Clariant's portfolio in this field. The properties of the products, including cohesion, open time and viscosity, can be precisely modified. The products are suitable for conventional adhesive systems and new variants alike.

Additional modifications of the polymeric basic structure with maleic anhydride or trimethoxy vinylsilane offer countless new possibilities to tailor the property profile of the products. For example, using Licocene® PP MA 7452 can significantly improve the adhesion to polar substrates and heat resistance. Licocene® PE SI 3361, a moisture-curing polymer, makes it easy to produce environmentally friendly reactive adhesives with excellent adhesive properties on glass, wood and other polar surfaces.
