Clariant at the American Coatings Show and Conference 2008

Published on 2008-04-11. Author : SpecialChem

Coventry, RI, March 12, 2008 -- Clariant's Pigments & Additives Division will exhibit at the American Coatings Show and Conference premiering in Charlotte, NC, June 3-5, 2008. A variety of Clariant's productivity-enhancing and environmentally friendly products will be featured at Booth 1721. These include Easily Dispersible (ED) pigments and Colanyl® 500 pigment preparations, as well as Ceridust® 3921F, an innovative micronized PTFE wax mixture.

Easily Dispersible Pigments

ED pigments reduce dispersion times in solvent-based coatings systems by 50 to 70% compared to conventional pigments. In addition, ED pigments are very cost effective by achieving full color dispersion with minimal energy usage due to a widely compatible dispersing agent bonded to the surface. No other additives are required in the paint formula to achieve maximum value in use.

ED pigments can be used in many common solvent-based coatings systems such as melamine-cured baking enamels, air-drying coatings, and 2-pack reactive systems. Compared to coatings made with conventional pigments, coatings with ED pigments also exhibit improved gloss and less haze. ED pigments can be dispersed with a dissolver, producing a finer grind and higher color strength than conventional pigments processed under the same conditions, eliminating the need for high-energy dispersion equipment.

The following products are currently available: Hostaperm® Violet RL-ED LV 3064 (C.I. Pigment Violet 23), Novoperm® Orange HL 70-ED LV 3065 (C.I. Pigment Orange 36), Novoperm® Yellow F2G-ED LV 3066 (C.I. Pigment Yellow 194), Hostaperm® Pink E-ED LV 3476 (C.I. Pigment Red 122), Hostaperm® Blue B2G-ED LV 3491(C.I. Pigment Blue 15:3), Hostaperm® Yellow H4G-ED LV 3620 (C.I. Pigment Yellow 151), and Novoperm® Yellow M2R 70-ED (C.I. Pigment Yellow 139). Other pigments are under development.

Environmentally Friendly Pigments

A comprehensive range of environmentally friendly pigment preparations from Clariant, marketed under the Colanyl® 500 name, are aqueous preparations with high pigment content and are free of binding agents and solvents. Suitable for many different applications, these preparations are available in chromatic shades and include extra-narrow strength tolerance of ±2% gravimetrically and ±3% volumetrically. They are ideal for use with automated dosing and mixing equipment due to their excellent flow, ease of pumping, and resistance to sedimentation and drying.

Colanyl 500® products are used primarily in aqueous dispersion paints and synthetic resin-bound renderings. The preparations are also suitable for coloring aqueous wood stains and veneers, acrylic and polyester casting systems, latex, and water resistance inks. Products in the Colanyl 500® series are very-low-VOC and APE-free aqueous pigments dispersions.

Micronized PTFE wax Mixture

Environmental awareness has led to the increased use of powder coatings utilizing micronized waxes based on polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), or polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). In answer to this trend, Clariant has introduced TP Ceridust® 3921 F, a micronized PTFE wax mixture based on an innovative polyolefin. When formulated into powder coatings, this additive improves scratch resistance, enhances slip resistance, and imparts antiblocking characteristics.
