BASEL, Switzerland -- Ciba Inc. has entered into an agreement with Lamberti Group to purchase the Italy-based specialty chemical maker's photoinitiator business. With unique professional skills, technology know-how and patented products, the business will strengthen Ciba's offer of UV curing solutions for coatings, inks, adhesives and electronics and expand its range of photoinitiators that are suitable for food packaging applications. Ciba and Lamberti intend to finalize the deal as soon as possible, pending regulatory approvals.

Thomas Engelhardt, Global Head of Ciba's Coating Effects Segment, says: "We are excited about this opportunity to grow in one of the most important areas of our business. Lamberti offers complementary technologies, particularly in food packaging, and it shares Ciba's commitment to cutting-edge innovation. By combining its photoinitiator products and know -how with our own, we can provide a broader, deeper and more versatile range of UV curing solutions to our customers."

Ciba CEO Brendan Cummins comments: "As we reshape our portfolio, we are building on the Company's core technological strengths. Lamberti's photoinitiator business is attractive because of its excellent fit with our current offer and its valuable intellectual property and expertise. This move will strengthen UV curing as a growth driver in our Coating Effects business."

Lamberti Group says: "We are pleased to have found in Ciba the right home for our photoinitiator business. Together, our two companies' UV curing solutions will create the most complete and innovative offer on the market, continuing the successful development begun by Lamberti many years ago. Our business will also benefit from joining the global R&D, marketing and sales network of a major industry player. This opportunity will allow us at Lamberti to develop and invest even more in our core businesses and technologies."

Photoinitiators play a crucial role in the UV curing of surfaces such as industrial coatings, inks, adhesives and electronics. On absorption of light, they catalyze chemical reactions that result in significant changes in the solubility and physical properties of the surface and help speed polymerization of the final cross-linked product. In 2007, Lamberti's photoinitiator business had worldwide sales of under 20 million Euro and employed less than 50 people.
