Borealis Announces Investment of EUR 400 M in LDPE Plant at the Nordic Film & Extrusion Conference 2011

Published on 2011-05-31. Author : SpecialChem

Borealis, a leading provider of chemical and innovative plastics solutions that create value for society, led the Nordic Film and Extrusion Conference 2011 held from 19-20 May in Gothenburg, Sweden.

This special conference used the theme "Creating New Horizons for the film and extrusion coating industry" and included keynote presentations by leading Borealis personnel as well as a visit to the Borealis Stenungsund site, where the company recently completed an investment of over EUR 400 million in a new 350,000 tonnes per year (t/y) high pressure low density polyethylene (LDPE) plant, enhancing its capability to provide advanced materials for the Nordic LDPE film market.

Highlights of the presentations included an introduction to BorShape™, a new generation of film materials with unparalleled performance, and BorLite™ linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE).

BorShape™ offers the polyolefins (PO) film market new opportunities for developing innovative packaging films with less material, greater efficiency and improved environmental and lifecycle performance. High toughness and very high stiffness allow faster line speeds, downgauging of up to 30%, and lower energy use during processing and transportation for films that match or outperform the features of comparable advanced metallocene based PE materials.

BorLite™ sets new standards in the performance of Machine Direction Orientation (MDO) films. Based on Borealis' proprietary Borstar® LLD bimodal technology, the range was developed specifically to optimise the enhanced film properties and production efficiency benefits created by MDO processing technology. BorLite offers step-change downgauging, high impact strength, high puncture resistance, and good tear resistance in machine direction, in addition to lower operational costs and reductions in energy and CO2 emissions. It brings trouble-free, smooth operation to the MDO process, giving the flexibility for film performance properties to be tailored.

These are just two examples of sustainable innovations, underpinning Borealis' ability to turn market needs into new products with an improved environmental footprint. Borealis is continuously investing in its innovation centres in Sweden, Finland and Austria thus augmenting its innovation capabilities for the future.

"Through the years, Borealis has always placed a strong focus on the Nordic market in areas such as extrusion coating and film business, said Wim Roels, Chairman of the Nordic Film and Extrusion Conference and Senior Vice President of Borealis' Film & Fibre Business Unit. He further commented, "Although market conditions are changing continuously, our Nordic team wanted to use this regionally dedicated conference to underline our long term commitment to the Nordic market through our investments in innovation, partnership and unique local service."
