Bayer’s Researchers Explore UV-cured and Elastomeric Coatings at e5

CHARLOTTE, N.C., May 2, 2004 - Researchers with Bayer will present a paper describing the results of their investigation of the physical properties, aspects of formulation, and applications of UV-cured elastomeric coatings.

Jan Weikard, Wolfgang Fischer, Erhard Luhmann and Diethelm Rappen of Bayer MaterialScience AG, will present their paper May 2-5, here at the E5 UV & EB Expo & Conference.

Their paper is entitled UV-cured And Elastomeric Coatings - A Contradiction?

In the paper, the researchers present the results of their investigation into the extent to which radiation curing of urethane acrylates can increase coating elasticity. They also describe the results of their efforts to explore the factors of the polymers structure responsible for the elastomeric properties.

"In common perception, UV-cured coatings are associated with properties like high hardness and abrasion resistance, and are used in applications that require a limited amount of flexibility," explained Weikard. "Urethane acrylate chemistry offers the freedom to design coating raw materials with elastomeric properties. We investigated the syntheses of elastomeric urethane acrylates, and produced samples with elongation at break values of 500%."
