Bayer MaterialScience LLC Study Finds One-Component Waterborne Polyurethane Coatings Suitable

PITTSBURGH -- Many factors must be weighed when selecting the proper industrial coating. Considerations include the level of protection desired and the performance characteristics needed to stand up to job conditions. A group of Bayer MaterialScience LLC scientists have performed a study to determine if one-component (1K) waterborne (WB) polyurethane coatings are suitable for use in industrial direct-to-metal applications.

Pete Schmitt, strategic technology manager, Bayer MaterialScience LLC, presented the findings of this study at the Southern Society of Coatings Technology (SSCT) 2010 Annual Meeting & Technical Conference, which was held recently in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Schmitt presented "Waterborne Polyurethane Coatings used in Direct-to-Metal Applications" as part of the technical program. The presentation was co-authored by Margaret Kendi, associate research scientist, and Dr. Raymond Stewart, senior R&D scientist, both of Bayer MaterialScience LLC.

The presentation detailed the results of Ms. Kendi's study of the performance of a 1K WB polyurethane resin vs. that of traditional coatings in direct-to-metal applications.

All coatings were applied to various substrates, including cold-rolled steel, zinc phosphate treated steel, iron phosphate treated steel, milled aluminum and chromium-treated aluminum. The coatings were tested for adhesion, Cleveland condenser humidity resistance and salt fog corrosion resistance. In the end, the study confirmed that 1K WB coatings worked as well or better than commercially available coatings in direct-to-metal applications.

An important finding of the study was the quality of corrosion resistance found with the 1K WB polyurethane as displayed in salt fog exposure testing. Also, Kendi and her associates found that it was possible to accomplish with one coat of the 1K WB polyurethane what traditionally took two layers to accomplish with other commercially available direct-to-metal coatings.

In addition to these benefits, this direct-to-metal 1K WB polyurethane also provides adhesion to various types of metal substrates, is easily applied, resists water spots early, contains lower volatile organic compound (VOC) levels (compared with commercially available direct-to-metal coatings), has lower energy requirements, and more.

According to Schmitt, "The superior performance of the 1K WB coatings throughout the testing, coupled with their positive performance properties - like exterior durability - make 1K WB coatings a viable coatings option for industrial direct-to-metal applications."
