Bayer MaterialScience Innovations Support Velozzi SOLO Crossover AEV Design for Sleek, Dazzling Style

PITTSBURGH -- Innovative materials from Bayer MaterialScience LLC are under, over, around and through the new SOLO crossover alternative energy vehicle (AEV) from Velozzi vying for the Automotive X Prize, a competition to develop and ultimately bring to production vehicles that can achieve 100 or more miles per gallon. Bayer MaterialScience is collaborating with Velozzi and its suppliers on both the SOLO and the Velozzi Supercar roadster, providing expertise and materials technologies for interiors and exteriors to Velozzi's design while supporting the development process from the concept stage to production. Innovative Bayer MaterialScience materials enable Velozzi's aggressive designs while providing production flexibility for vehicles that not only appeal to consumers' desire for fuel economy, but also their sense of style.

Using lighter weight materials is essential to development of AEVs that can attain dramatically higher fuel efficiency goals. Among the Bayer MaterialScience materials being incorporated in the vehicles are the company's Baytubes® multi-walled carbon nanotubes for use in strong, yet lightweight carbon fiber body panels. Other innovative solutions Velozzi is working with from Bayer MaterialScience include polycarbonates for automotive glazing, polyurethane composite constructions for load floors and liftgate, raw materials for waterborne and low solvent polyurethane coatings and adhesives, thermoplastic urethane for interior skins, and a multitude of more conventional materials and applications.
