Bayer MaterialScience increases focus on future business activities

LEVERKUSEN -- With its new "Greenhouse" concept, Bayer MaterialScience AG has developed a platform designed to translate promising new ideas into marketable products and applications that until now have not formed part of the company's core businesses. The "Greenhouse" provides a suitable business environment for the targeted, flexible and rapid development of projects. If a project is assessed as viable, a business plan is drawn up and preparations are made for market launch. "Our goal is to translate projects into independent start-up companies belonging to Bayer MaterialScience," says Ian Paterson, Member of the Bayer MaterialScience Board of Management responsible for marketing and innovation. Bayer MaterialScience also expects to create new jobs as a result.

One special area of focus is carbon nanotubes (CNTs), which Bayer MaterialScience plans to market worldwide under the trade name Baytubes. Thanks to their remarkable properties, the nanoscale particles are ideal for many highly promising applications, from antistatic packaging films for sophisticated electronic components, through electromagnetic interference shielding for computer and mobile telephone housings, to artificial muscles, in which CNTs can serve as actuators.
