Bayer at Paintindia 2014: Discussed Polyurethane Coating Solutions for Various Sectors

At PaintIndia 2014, Bayer MaterialScience, Coatings, Adhesives and Specialties (CAS) Business Unit highlighted its latest innovative polyurethane coating solutions in mobility, construction and consumer sectors, under the motto "Leader in Polyurethanes". Visitors at the Bayer stand had the opportunity to touch and experience the featured exhibits and discuss with Bayer coating application experts on topics such as key industry trends and material solutions.

Dr. Kumar Iyer, Head – Commercial Operations, India Sub-Continent of the Coatings, Adhesives and Specialties Business Unit at Bayer MaterialScience said, "With over 75 years of experience in leading polyurethane innovation in close cooperation with industry partners, Bayer MaterialScience has been at the forefront of technology development by offering solutions to meet the challenges and needs of the customers."

India is a key growth market for the Company and Bayer's strategy is to secure returns beyond the current scope of applications. The penetration of polyurethane as a technology is still very low at approximately 7 per cent in the Indian market and the Company aims to enlarge the application base for exisiting chemistries with a value-based approach. At PaintIndia, Bayer showcased its new business model in the core business according to products, which sold isocyanates (Desmodur®) and its derivatives for multiplemid-sized applications.

The booth was inaugurated by Samir Hifri, Head – Commercial Operations, Asia Pacific and Ajay Durrani, Managing Director and Senior Country Representative for Bayer MaterialScience in India. Speaking at the occasion, Samir Hifri said, "Asia is one of the strongest growth markets for Bayer MaterialScience and accounted for EUR 3.15 billion sales in 2012. In response to the dynamic market here, Bayer Material Science will further strengthen its commitment to growth and innovation in the region with clear focus on our core segments through market driven innovation that address Asia and India's requirements. We are investing in our people to improve the local innovation capabilities through projects like the Polyisocyanates Unit in Ankleshwarand the Technical Laboratory in Mumbai."

The booth at PaintIndia is based on the different key application segments, namely Consumer, Infrastructure and Mobility. Actual finished products have been showcased through these selective niches. Adds Kumar Iyer, "We are also trying to reassess the market for waterborne isocyanate derivatives (Bayhrdrol®). We have teams working around Textile, Cosmetics, Medical applications, as well as Elastomers, where we have a good opportunity to sell polyurethanes." Talk shows by Bayer experts supported by video demonstrations reinforced the new applications and new technologies and reiterated Bayer's stand as a leader in Polyurethane.

Car Refinishing: New Generation of Waterborne PU Base Coat

The new generation of waterborne PU base coat, formulated with Bayhydrol® polyurethane dispersions, makes it possible to meet the most demanding environment regulations without sacrificing the high performance of traditional solvent borne coating system. It has the typical advantage of PU coating, a good combination of hardness and toughness, which directly translates to better stone chip resistance and longer durability. By switching to the latest waterborne PU base coat technology from Bayer MaterialScience, car 3S shops can expect higher efficiency in paint workshop, due to the unique properties of easy wet color matching, fast drying speed and easy sandability etc. The new waterborne PU base coat technology from Bayer MaterialScience matches the automotive industry's transition towards sustainability and also enables the industry to upgrade qualityand services.

Furniture: Waterborne UV PU Coating

The India furniture industry upgrading is entering an important phase. How to meet the new environment regulations, be it in production or product? How to increase the added-value of final products? The advanced waterborne UV-curing PU coating, formulated with Bayhydrol® UV from Bayer MaterialScience, is the most promising technology within the variety of environmentally friendly coating systems. The waterborne UV technology is the fastest-curing waterborne coating technology, has the highest crosslink density, offers close to 0% VOC and overspray recycling, and allows post forming through stepwise curing. These advantages make this technology ideal choice for furniture manufacturers to achieve higher efficiency and save costs. Bayhydrol® UV grades are suitable for a wide range of substrates, ranging from wood to plastics and films applications, to achieve different coating effects, which creates flexibility for the furniture designers.

IT & Electronics: Decorative PU Coating for New Material

For IT &electronics industry, 'thinner' and 'lighter' have always been the key word for trendy product design. Designers are continuously trying new substrates to make the product even thinner and lighter. Recently, the composites,such as carbon/glass fiber reinforced plastic, are very favored. The surface of composites is quite coarse and has poor adhesion to coatings. Bayer MaterialScience has developed the cost effective decorative PU coating solution, available in both solvent-borne and waterborne system, to address this new market need. It helps the IT & electronics brands and manufactures to enable light weight products with attractive appearances and high performance surfaces. Polyisocyanates Unit, Ankleshwar

In 2011, Bayer MaterialScience invested approximately EUR 20 million in a aromatic and aliphatic polyisocyanate manufacturing facility in India as part of its strategy to grow its business in the country and strengthen its position as a market leader in the supply of polyurethane raw materials. Located in Ankleshwar, Gujarat, the facility produces Desmodur® polyisocyanates, raw materials for the formulation of a variety of polyurethane coatings, adhesives and sealants. Specifically, these are Desmodur® N, used in the automotive, industrial and plastic coating sectors & Desmodur® L for the coating of wood and furniture as well as for the formulation of adhesives for flexible packaging.

Coatings, Adhesives and Specialties Laboratory, Mumbai

This Application Development Lab inauguarated in 2013, will primarily focuses on application areas like Auto OEMs, Auto Refinish, Plastic coatings, Protective coatings, Wood finishes and General Industrial coatings. In addition, the lab provides tailor made solutions for Adhesives & Sealants in the Transportation, Construction, Furniture, Packaging and Shoe industries.

This lab functions in close co-ordination with Bayer's Application Development Labs in Germany (EMEA) and Shanghai (APAC) to support the coatings and adhesives market in the Indian subcontinent. It is equipped with state-of-the-art testing, formulation and application equipment, meeting global standards and guidelines.The Laboratory supports the business case for ISC region that serves the needs of different customer segments.A local application development is required for the Technology conversion especially PU substituting other technologies.

During the course of the exhibition, special tours of the Laboratory have also been arranged for customers. These tours will continue during the course of the year as well on appointment.

The introduction of Small packaging (20 kg packs) for ALI and ARP derivatives is one of our examples of market led innovation specifically targeted towards Medium & Small scale enterprises which wish to move from alternate technologies to Polyurethanes.
