BASF to Showcase High-performance Wind Energy-related Products at Offshore Wind China 2012

BASF, the world's leading chemical company, will participate in Offshore Wind China 2012 Conference & Exhibition from May 30 to June 1, 2012 to demonstrate its high-performance wind energy-related products and comprehensive solutions that increases production efficiency and durability of wind energy equipment.

With ever-increasing focus on clean energy in China in recent years, wind energy has played a major role in realizing China's goals of energy mix diversification and emission reduction. The global trend towards offshore plants has raised the bar for the technology: rotor diameters of more than 150 metres, blade lengths of up to 90 metres and the extreme climate on rough seas pose a challenge for construction and materials. Compared with their on-land counterparts, reliability is even more critical for off-shore wind farms for enhancing operating efficiency and controlling long-term maintenance costs.

"We are glad to support the development of wind power in China as a climate-friendly source of energy with our broad portfolio and know-how. BASF is committed to helping our customers to meet the challenges in the wind energy industry," said Dr. Zheng Daqing, Senior Vice President and member of BASF Greater China Country Board.

Supported by decades of expertise in chemical solutions, BASF will showcase its fullest series of wind energy related solutions to date in Asia, including:

Rotor blades

For rotor blades, BASF provides epoxy systems, coating systems, polyamide film used for VARTM (vacuum-assisted resin transfer molding) of rotor blades, PET foams for composite structure of rotor blades, as well as polyurethanes (PU) raw materials (isocyanates) for specialty PVC foam in rotor blades.

Bases and towers

BASF's solutions for wind turbine bases and towers include fatigue resistant high performance grouts for foundation installation and specialised concrete admixtures for gravity foundation and concrete towers.

Gear boxes and cables

For gearboxes, BASF provides lubricants, hydraulic fluids, gear oil and coolant. BASF also provides thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) for cable sheathing and PU for offshore cable protection.

BASF is working closely with the wind energy industry in China, including technical support to tailor the solutions to the needs of customers, for example from its epoxy system lab and coatings lab in Shanghai.

BASF will be sharing ultra-strength grouting solution for offshore wind turbine base installations at the Offshore Installations Session on May 31. The company will also introduce its offshore wind energy coating system at the Blade/ Gear and Bearing/Wind Supply Chain's Key Technology Session on the same day.

In 2010, China already became #1 in newly installed capacity accounting for more than 50% of the world market for new wind turbines. Preliminary evaluation shows that the 18,000-kilometers continental coastline and three million square kilometers utilizable sea area in China provide at least 200 million kilowatts wind energy potential.
