SYDNEY/Münster -- BASF recently signed an agreement with Akzo Nobel for BASF to acquire the shares in BASF Akzo Nobel (BAN). BAN has been a 50-50 joint venture between the two companies to market coatings for the automotive industry in Australia. Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed.

Following the transaction, BASF will take the opportunity to combine its two coatings entities in Australia. Effective July 1, 2005, the businesses for OEM coatings and refinish coatings (BASF Coatings Pty Ltd. in Sydney) will be consolidated in one company under the name of BASF Coatings Australia Pty Ltd. In 2004, these two businesses had posted combined sales of approximately €25 million. About 80 employees will work for the new company.

Dr. Wolfgang Micklitz, Director OEM Coatings for Asia-Pacific, said: "This transaction gives us an excellent foundation to further develop our OEM business in Australia. BASF is known globally as market leader in high-quality coatings technology for the automotive industry. As a strong member of BASF's business networks, both globally and in the Asia-Pacific region, BASF Coatings Australia will fully capitalize on these strengths as a preferred partner to help our customers be more successful."

The Melbourne-based joint venture BASF Akzo Nobel was formed in May 2000 focusing on OEM coatings. In addition to more efficient operations, BASF Coatings Australia will offer a broader product portfolio and reinforce its local market presence due to its standing as a global player. Pascal Goerdes, Managing Director of the new company, commented: "We are taking a big step forward in establishing one legal entity that combines BASF's coatings expertise and efficiently represents all of BASF's coatings activities in Australia."

With sales of €2 billion (2004) BASF's Coatings Division develops, produces and markets a high-quality range of innovative automotive OEM coatings, automotive refinishes and industrial coatings as well as decorative paints, and also the processes needed to apply them. In this business, eco-efficient water-based, powder and high-solids coatings as well as radiation-curable systems play a special part. BASF has a major, global presence in the coatings sector, with significant market positions in Europe, North America, South America and Asia-Pacific.
