BASF receives Albemarle Corporation’s Supplier Recognition Award

Published on 2005-06-14. Author : SpecialChem

CHARLOTTE, N.C -- BASF in North America has been awarded Albemarle Corporation's (NYSE: ALB) 2004 supplier Recognition Award, establishing itself as an elite supplier for Albemarle.

"In spite of a severe industry shortage of acrylates, BASF persevered to supply us material thereby supporting Albemarle's launch of a new product," said Justine E. MacDonald, Vice President, Global Supply Chain Management, Albemarle Corporation. "Moreover, BASF continues to work with us as we grow this strategic business."

"We worked very hard to meet acrylate commitments made to all of our customers throughout the tight supply situation," said Robert Sawchuk, Marketing Manager for BASF's Acrylic Monomers business in North America. "We had an agreement with Albemarle to provide a reliable supply of high quality acrylate, and worked very hard to be responsive to their product launch needs. Since our mission is to help our customers to be more successful, our team truly appreciates this important recognition."

On December 22, 2004, BASF began production of methyl acrylate in its new integrated petrochemical plant in Nanjing, China. In addition to methyl acrylate, BASF plans to produce other acrylic esters and glacial acrylic acid. Production capacities at this site include 160,000 metric tons per year of acrylic acid.

Acrylic acid and acrylic esters are highly versatile monomers that are used in many industrial applications. Acrylic esters are also widely used in the manufacture of pressure sensitive adhesives, packaging tapes, construction chemicals, surface coatings as well as exterior architectural latex coatings and paints. Acrylic acid is the most important precursor in the production of super-absorbent polymers, the active component of baby diapers and other hygienic products.
