BASF Offers Cathodic E-Coats for Corrosion Protection Over 30 Years

Published on 2010-10-29. Author : SpecialChem

MÜNSTER -- BASF has extensive expertise in e-coats. After all, BASF Coatings has been working on products and solutions for corrosion protection for more than three decades. BASF is now celebrating a major anniversary on the occasion of its partnership with Volvo at its Umeå, Sweden, site. Exactly 30 years ago, the plant, which manufactures truck cabs, was supplied with e-coats for the first time. This makes the Swedish company one of BASF's first customers to have this product.

The technology has been continuously refined, but the partnership, characterized by trust, has remained. "Today, we supply Volvo with our CathoGuard® 500 series, a lead-free and therefore environmentally friendly technology," said Monika Heithorn, head of Europe Truck & Bus at BASF Coatings. "The now 30-year partnership with Volvo underlines our years of competence in e-coating. Our partnership also shows that we not only play an important part in coating passenger vehicles, but are also significant for the truck and bus sector."

E-coating is an electrochemical application technique. For this technique, the body, or the rims and axles, are completely immersed in an electrically conductive, waterborne paint.

BASF Coatings covers the entire product and service portfolio for high-quality refinishing of busses and trucks - ranging from corrosion protection to basecoats, which provide the color, as well as glossy clearcoats. The company also supplies Volvo Trucks in Blainville, France, in addition to the plant in Sweden.

Heinrich Johnen was one of the first people present from day one at Volvo in Umeå. Back in 1980, Johnen was responsible for customer Volvo in Sweden at BASF Coatings, accompanying the product launch. "The cooperation with Volvo's employees was outstanding. All of us were aware that we were introducing something entirely new. Over the past 30 years we have of course always improved the technology. Corrosion protection in particular and most of all, environmental protection, have constantly improved."

The next step is already just around the corner. The newest generation of CathoGuard® 800 is to be launched in Umeå in 2011. Of course, CathoGuard® 800 is lead-free, stands out for its optimized edge protection, flow and throwing power. It is also tin-free and meets the latest standards in environmental protection legislation. The solvent content is less than one percent, which helps BASF contribute to environmental protection. That's good news for customers, too.
